TITLE: Associate Director of Counseling
DEPARTMENT: Counseling Services
REPORTS TO: Director of Counseling
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 35 hours per week. Flexible schedule to meet department needs. Some evening, weekends and extended hours will be required. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice, to all on and off- campus sites as needed by the college.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible for managing the departmental assessment process and ensuring that it ties directly to student learning outcomes and for enhancing student success by monitoring the programs and services offered by the Counseling Services Department primarily on the Elizabeth Campus. Additionally, this individual will serve as a campus resource for students, faculty and colleagues.
TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists the Director of Counseling with leading, developing, coordinating and administrating Counseling Services programs primarily on the Elizabeth Campus.
2. Design, plan, conduct and evaluate departmental assessment programs, procedures and activities and analyze institutional effectiveness for accreditation and planning purposes.
3. Evaluates the effective of services and programs primarily on the Elizabeth Campus. Prepares reports, proposals and maintains appropriate records as required.
4. Monitors, updates and maintains departmental website.
5. Assist the Director of Counseling in monitoring, coordinating and evaluating staff functions and professional development primarily on the Elizabeth Campus.
6. Facilitates workshops and programs to faculty, students and staff that are geared to increase student awareness, retention and graduation success.
7. Serves as the Director of Counseling representative in managing the judicial hearing process.
8. Conducts advising and educational planning sessions with students that encompass college programs, course requirements, academic progress, career plans, transfer articulation and dual admission agreements.
9. Provides assistance to students in obtaining career and vocational counseling and interest testing.
10. Assist students in formulating decision making skills, values clarification, personal interests, preferences and goals, and other strategies which support their personal, academic and career development and growth.
11. Creates and maintains collaborative relationships, communication and outreach methods with collegiate colleagues to effectively facilitate retention efforts and service students.
12. Assists faculty with students who are experiencing difficulties relating to personal, vocational and academic concerns or related educational issues.
13. Surveys, conducts assessments, submits proposals, prepares annual reports and maintains appropriate records as required by the Division of Student Services.
14. Performs related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Masters Degree in Counseling. Degrees in Student Personnel Services, College Student Development or Student Affairs Counseling will also be considered if a Counseling Emphasis was associated with them.
2. Two (2) years of assessment and research experience.
3. Two (2) years of experience in college counseling and academic advising at the Community College level strongly desired.
4. Valid driver’s license and access to an automobile.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
1. Interpersonal, organization and communication skills required.
2. Computer efficiency, especially with Microsoft Word, Access PowerPoint and Excel Programs. Knowledge of Web page development and maintenance a plus. Familiarity with the Colleague database desirable.
