   About UCC - Astronomy Adjuncts – Observational Astronomy Faculty Position   

TITLE:    Astronomy Adjuncts – Observational Astronomy Faculty Position

DEPARTMENT:    Physics/Engineering/Technology

REPORTS TO:    Department Chair

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:    Travel to the campus and evening hours are required.  Additional day or weekend hours may be scheduled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:    Faculty member’s responsibilities shall be teaching courses as assigned, developing course content, student advisement regarding progress, attendance at department meetings, and involvement in professional development activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Masters Degree in discipline required. Doctorate Degree preferred.

2. Must be able to instruct classes at UCC campuses.

3. As part of the course will be online, must have training in developing and teaching an online course.

4. Must be willing to get trained in teaching online at UCC (if requested).

5. Must have experience in operating large manual telescopes and other tools used for making astronomical measurements.

6. Official college transcripts must be submitted prior to interview.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teaches assigned courses in accordance with description published in catalog and the approved course outline, in accordance with schedule of classes and incorporating alternative approaches, technologies and methods when possible.
  2. Based on the current preliminary syllabus, will revise the syllabus, develop course content, select a text, and put relevant sections of the course online. Coordinates with other faculty on course implementation.
  3. Meets all scheduled class meetings and all scheduled office hours.
  4. Advises Department Chairperson/Program Director of absences in a timely manner.
  5. Maintains accurate grade and attendance records for students enrolled in classes and submits required reports to Department Chairperson/Program Director and/or Student Records Office.
  6. Cooperates with Coordinator/Department Chairperson in developing and revising courses of study and curricula.
  7. Incorporates an appreciation of diverse lifestyles, cultures and national perspectives into courses.
  8. Submits progress reports on students for counseling and record keeping purposes and discusses with counselors and other appropriate personnel any problems of students which may require special attention.
  9. Advises students and/or performs special assigned duties related to registration. Serves as faculty advisor to student organizations (voluntary) and provides for interaction with students outside the classroom environment.
  10. Engages in assessment of learning outcomes and demonstrates the use of the results of these assessments in course planning.
  11. Specifies competency based student outcomes as the objectives of all courses.
  12. Serves on college-wide committees.
  13. Attends scheduled departmental, discipline and general faculty and staff meetings.
  14. Plans in advance to ensure availability of supplies, textbooks, and classroom equipment requisite to successful teaching of assigned classes.
  15. Incorporates the use of the library into courses, uses writing as an instructional method, and utilizes computing and other academic technologies in courses when possible.
  16. Engages in continual professional development activities as specified by the appropriate academic officer.
  17. Attends convocation and graduation exercises.
  18. Adheres to professional standards of procedures.
  19. Represents the College in the community.
  20. Adheres to College policies and procedures.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

· Certification or license as needed and appropriate.

· Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduates.

· Willingness to use alternatives educational delivery systems and instructional techniques.

· Commitment to incorporation of library, computers, writing and culturally diverse perspective into the curriculum.

· Knowledge of competency-based education.

· Commitment to the practice of providing for out-of-class interaction with students.

· Fundamental competency in the use of information technology.

· Commitment to continued assessment of the teaching-learning process and its outcomes.

· Commitment to continual professional growth and development.

· Demonstrated mastery of subject matter of discipline.
