TITLE: Practical Nursing - Adjunct Faculty
DEPARTMENT: Practical Nursing
REPORTS TO: Director of Practical Nursing
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Travel to the campus and health care agencies, and hours outside of the traditional weekday work schedule may be required. Day, evening, or weekend hours scheduled.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Faculty member’s responsibilities shall be teaching courses as assigned, student advisement regarding progress, attendance at department meetings, and involvement in professional development activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaches assigned courses in accordance with description published in catalog and the approved course outline, in accordance with course schedule, and by incorporating alternative approaches, technologies and methods, whenever possible.
- Presents theoretical nursing content according to the course outline and current nursing practice.
- Contributes exam/quiz items appropriate to course objectives. Administers, grades, evaluates, and reviews exams/quizzes.
- Records and maintains grades of exams, quizzes, student papers/assignments, and submits required reports to the Program Director and/or Student Records Office.
- Coordinates with other faculty on course implementation.
- Selects appropriate classroom resources and clinical sites.
- Prepares and posts assignments for patient care.
- Maintains ongoing communication with personnel in affiliating clinical agencies and completes pre- and post-clinical evaluations of clinical sites with agency representatives.
- Instructs, supervises, and evaluates students in simulated and actual patient care experiences.
- Provides feedback to students on theory and clinical performance.
- Completes and submits clinical evaluations for each student in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates professional accountability.
- Arrives on time for class, clinical experiences, meetings, and other scheduled events.
- Informs the Program Director if he/she will be absent or late.
- Notifies the Program Director if he/she is unable to meet the agreed upon commitments.
- Utilizes principles of current nursing practice and diverse teaching strategies in class and clinical experiences.
- Maintains availability for students.
- Recommends additions to the Library, Skills Lab, and Computer resources.
- Plans in advance to ensure availability of supplies, textbooks, and classroom equipment requisite to successful teaching of assigned classes.
- Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth via formal and/or informal nursing education.
- Adheres to professional standards and legal guidelines of practice.
- Cooperates with the Program Director and full-time faculty in evaluating and revising courses of study and curricula.
- Incorporates an appreciation of diverse lifestyles, cultures, and national perspectives into courses.
- Submits progress reports on students for counseling and record keeping purposes, and discusses with counselors and other appropriate personnel any problems of students that may require special attention.
- Engages in assessment of learning outcomes and demonstrates the use of the results of these assessments in course planning.
- Attends schedule departmental and staff meetings.
- Incorporates the use of the library into courses, uses writing as an instructional method, and utilizes computing and other academic technologies in courses, whenever possible.
- Attends pinning and graduation exercises, as able.
- Represents the College in the community.
- Adheres to College policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree in nursing required
- Current N.J. RN nursing license
- Minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience, and/or at least 1 year of instructional experience in a nursing education program within the past 5 years
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate students
- Willingness and ability to use alternative educational strategies
- Commitment to incorporation of library, computers, writing, and culturally diverse perspectives into the curriculum
- Knowledge of competency-based education
- Commitment to the practice of providing out-of-class interaction with students
- Fundamental competency in the use of information technology
- Commitment to continued assessment of the teaching-learning process and its outcomes
- Commitment to continual professional growth and development
- Demonstrated mastery of subject matter or discipline
- Clinical and/or instructional experience in the specific nursing field (ex. Pediatrics)
- Demonstration of classroom strategies and clinical nursing techniques
- Evidence of formal and/or informal continuing nursing education
- Evidence of professional involvement – publication, membership in nursing organizations
- References from prior employers, colleagues
