   About UCC - Practical Nursing - Adjunct Faculty   

TITLE:    Practical Nursing - Adjunct Faculty

DEPARTMENT:    Practical Nursing

REPORTS TO:    Director of Practical Nursing

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:    Travel to the campus and health care agencies, and hours outside of the traditional weekday work schedule may be required.  Day, evening, or weekend hours scheduled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:    Faculty member’s responsibilities shall be teaching courses as assigned, student advisement regarding progress, attendance at department meetings, and involvement in professional development activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teaches assigned courses in accordance with description published in catalog and the approved course outline, in accordance with course schedule, and by incorporating alternative approaches, technologies and methods, whenever possible.
    1. Presents theoretical nursing content according to the course outline and current nursing practice.
    2. Contributes exam/quiz items appropriate to course objectives. Administers, grades, evaluates, and reviews exams/quizzes.
    3. Records and maintains grades of exams, quizzes, student papers/assignments, and submits required reports to the Program Director and/or Student Records Office.
    4. Coordinates with other faculty on course implementation.
    5. Selects appropriate classroom resources and clinical sites.
    6. Prepares and posts assignments for patient care.
    7. Maintains ongoing communication with personnel in affiliating clinical agencies and completes pre- and post-clinical evaluations of clinical sites with agency representatives.
    8. Instructs, supervises, and evaluates students in simulated and actual patient care experiences.
    9. Provides feedback to students on theory and clinical performance.
    10. Completes and submits clinical evaluations for each student in a timely manner.

  1. Demonstrates professional accountability.
    1. Arrives on time for class, clinical experiences, meetings, and other scheduled events.
    2. Informs the Program Director if he/she will be absent or late.
    3. Notifies the Program Director if he/she is unable to meet the agreed upon commitments.
    4. Utilizes principles of current nursing practice and diverse teaching strategies in class and clinical experiences.
    5. Maintains availability for students.
    6. Recommends additions to the Library, Skills Lab, and Computer resources.
    7. Plans in advance to ensure availability of supplies, textbooks, and classroom equipment requisite to successful teaching of assigned classes.
    8. Assumes responsibility for personal and professional growth via formal and/or informal nursing education.
    9. Adheres to professional standards and legal guidelines of practice.

  1. Cooperates with the Program Director and full-time faculty in evaluating and revising courses of study and curricula.

  1. Incorporates an appreciation of diverse lifestyles, cultures, and national perspectives into courses.

  1. Submits progress reports on students for counseling and record keeping purposes, and discusses with counselors and other appropriate personnel any problems of students that may require special attention.

  1. Engages in assessment of learning outcomes and demonstrates the use of the results of these assessments in course planning.

  1. Attends schedule departmental and staff meetings.

  1. Incorporates the use of the library into courses, uses writing as an instructional method, and utilizes computing and other academic technologies in courses, whenever possible.

  1. Attends pinning and graduation exercises, as able.

  1. Represents the College in the community.

  1. Adheres to College policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in nursing required

  • Current N.J. RN nursing license

  • Minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience, and/or at least 1 year of instructional experience in a nursing education program within the past 5 years

  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate students

  • Willingness and ability to use alternative educational strategies

  • Commitment to incorporation of library, computers, writing, and culturally diverse perspectives into the curriculum

  • Knowledge of competency-based education

  • Commitment to the practice of providing out-of-class interaction with students

  • Fundamental competency in the use of information technology

  • Commitment to continued assessment of the teaching-learning process and its outcomes

  • Commitment to continual professional growth and development

  • Demonstrated mastery of subject matter or discipline
    • Clinical and/or instructional experience in the specific nursing field (ex. Pediatrics)
    • Demonstration of classroom strategies and clinical nursing techniques
    • Evidence of formal and/or informal continuing nursing education
    • Evidence of professional involvement – publication, membership in nursing organizations
    • References from prior employers, colleagues
