Academics - How to Make the Transition From EMT to Paramedic

The best way to make the transition from an EMT to a Paramedic is to start today to look at situations critically. Once you have made the decision to further your EMS career – start by rereading your EMT book. While this sounds boring, the foundation of Paramedicine begins with a strong EMT knowledge base.

Next, start assessing each BLS patient encounter at a higher level. Answer the; who, what, why, when and how on every call. Use the book Why Driven EMS - ISBN 978-1-4180-3817-5 as a reference for all your BLS patient encounters. This should be done on both emergent and non-emergent transports.

Lastly, look at your goal of becoming a paramedic student with excitement and enthusiasm. Do not fall victim to the negative feedback you may encounter from other health care providers including EMS providers. Being a paramedic is a rewarding, mentally – physical – and emotionally challenging profession that demands a provider with high critical thinking skill and professionalism. These are traits that build over time and depart from a strong EMT skill set.
