   Academics - Prerequisites

The application process for the program begins six months PRIOR to the start of the program. There are prerequisites that must be completed prior to starting the program. These requirements are implemented to maintain our program’s high standard and excellent pass rate at the National Registry test.  All prerequisites must be completed prior to registration for the paramedic program.

  1. Hospital Sponsorship: All Paramedic Program Students (PMDC) are required by law to obtain MICU (Paramedic) hospital department sponsorship. This sponsorship allows students a clinical site to complete the clinical requirements for the program. There is a list of programs that have a long standing relationship with UCC. Be advised that hospitals make their student selection the February PRIOR to the program beginning in the fall semester.

  1. General Education Course Credits: All students of the Paramedic Program must have 9 credits of General Education course work. 3 credits must be ENG 101. The remaining 6 credits can be from the following list of courses:

Communications: ENG 102 – English 102
Mathematics: MAT 119 – College Algebra or higher
Science: Bio 105, Bio 106 Anatomy I and Anatomy II with a lab
Social Science: PSY 101 - General Psychology
PSY 105 – Group Dynamics
Humanities: HIS Elective – Humanities Elective
HUG 101 – Perspectives on Aging
Diversity: IDH 104 – Cultural Diversity in Health Care
Technology: CIS 100 – Intro to Computer Applications

Only course work completed from an accredited institution is eligible for transfer.  All courses must have an achieved grade of “C” or better.   Courses must be completed in the past 10 years unless they are part of an earned degree.

Basic Skill Testing: If you have not completed previous college course work, you must begin by taking the Basic Skills test. UCC utilizes the Accuplacer test; if you are taking the basic skills test at another county college, please ensure that the test is Accuplacer.

    • You are exempt from Basic Skills testing if you have the following:
      • SAT scores of 540 Reading and 530 Math.

    • If you are not exempt by SAT scores, you MUST take the Basic Skills Test. I urge you to take the test at Union County College since community colleges utilize different placement tests and results sometimes vary. If you require remedial course work, you may complete that work at your local community college. Make arrangements to take the test today! The UCC testing center phone number is 908-709-7538.

  1. Math Requirement: The Math requirement for the program is MAT 022.  Students must show Algebra competency prior to registering for the program.  This can be achieved by ONE of the following:
    • Successful completion of all remedial math courses prior to registering for the Paramedic Program.
    • SAT scores of 530 Math or higher.
    • Successful course completion of college Algebra or Statistics with an earned grade of "C" or higher from an accredited academic institution.
    • Current EMT and CPR certification: All students must maintain current NJ EMT and CPR certification through the entire Paramedic Program process. If your EMT card will expire before the end of the paramedic program - complete ALL the required recertification CEU’s PRIOR to starting the program.
