Eng 111 - English Composition for Speakers of Other Languages I

Detailed Description
English 111 is the first semester of a two-semester sequence, ENG 111 and ENG 112, designed as a writing course for students whose first language is not English. For non-native speakers of English, the sequence serves in lieu of a foreign language requirement and as a substitute for English 101 3 credits.

The focus of English 111 is on the development of non-native students' ability to write effectively. Special attention is given to the cultural implications of thought patterns, organization, and writing conventions in English
.

Activities common to level

  • Complete 3-4 essay assignments of approximately 500 words in length, demonstrating control of essay organization
  • Write essays in response to assigned readings
  • Use a word processor to draft and edit essay assignments
  • Complete a guided research paper of approximately 4-5 pages using library resources and APA or MLA documentation
  • Produce an organized portfolio containing all writing completed during the semester
  • Holistic essay
  • Midterm exam and/or Final exam
     

  • Eng 112 - English Composition for Speakers of Other Languages II

    Detailed Description
    English 112 is the first semester of a two-semester sequence, ENG 111 and ENG 112, designed as a writing course for students whose first language is not English. For non-native speakers of English, the sequence serves in lieu of a foreign language requirement and as a substitute for English 101 3 credits.
    The focus of English 112 is for students to read essays and fiction centered upon several themes and will evaluate, analyze, and interpret these texts through a variety of activities and assignments, including 4 major papers, one of which will be based on research.
    • Activities common to level
    • Complete unified and coherent essays of at least three pages ( 500 words) in length, based on course reading and library sources
    • Understand the importance of organizing the essay with introductory, supporting and concluding paragraphs
    • Demonstrate an increased ability to revise and edit papers
    • Demonstrate the ability to write a short timed in-class essay
    • Use a word processor to draft and edit essay assignments
    • Complete a research paper of at least5 pages using library resources and APA or MLA documentation or primary and secondary sources
    • Produce an organized portfolio containing all writing completed during the semester
    • Midterm exam and Final exam

    • Reading: Content/Support Courses with Credit
      ESL 083 - Advanced Reading In Business for ESL
      This course is paired with and serves as a support course for ESL Level six students who are enrolled in a special section of Business 101.  The purposes of the course are (1) to give students practice in responding to expository texts, fiction and articles in the area of business, and (2) to help students develop reading skills and strategies they can apply in other academic work.  Students must take both BUSE-101 and ESL 083 in order to get credit for the business course.

      ESL 084 - Advanced Reading in Psychology for ESL
      Detailed Description
      This course is paired with and serves as a support course for ESL Level six students who are enrolled in a special section of Psychology 101.  The purposes of the course are (1) to give students practice in responding to expository texts, fiction and articles in the area of psychology, and (2) to help students develop reading skills and strategies they can apply in other academic work.  Students must take both PSYE-101 and ESL 084 in order to get credit for the psychology course.
