   Academics - ESL Level 1

ESL Level 1 is a full-semester low beginning academic sequence designed for students whose native language is not English. Admission to the class is by placement testing, or by teacher recommendation. The course meets four days a week, 12 hours a week for 14 weeks (including exams). The purpose of this level is to develop students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The emphasis is on improving fluency in the language needed for a variety of everyday contexts such as personal information, family, house and neighborhood, and shopping.
Students who are successful in passing this level move on to Level 2. Students who need more time at the level must repeat the entire course.

Activities common to level

  • Learn vocabulary such as numbers, streets, family relationships, house and neighborhood, clothes and shopping and more
  • Learn grammar such as the present verb to be, the present continuous, yes/no questions, wh-questions and more
  • Read basic books from the library
  • Write an autobiography
  • Write in a journal
  • 1 hour a week of computer lab
  • Homework assignments
  • Quizzes: Grammar, Vocabulary, Spelling, Reading, and others
  • Midterm Exam and Final Exam
