Detailed Description ESL Level 4 is a full-semester intermediate academic sequence designed for students whose native language is not English. Admission to the class is by placement testing, completion of ESL Level 3 or by teacher recommendation. The course meets four days a week, 12 hours a week for 16 weeks (including exams). The purpose of this level is to develop students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The emphasis is on using real English materials to help students make the transition to advanced level language or career training. Students who are successful in passing this level move on to Level 5 . Students who need more time at the level must repeat the entire course .
Activities common to level
- Read 1 - 2 novels
- Read books from the library and do simple library research
- Read about American History
- Listen to cassette tapes of lectures and watch videotaped lectures and movies
- Write in a journal
- Learn and review grammar such as the present, past, past continuous, future, present perfect, present perfect continuous, modals, time clauses, simple passive, yes/no questions, wh-questions and more
- 1 hour a week of computer lab
- Homework assignments
- Quizzes: Grammar, Reading, and others
- Midterm Exam and Final Exam
