Detailed Description
ESL 054, 055 is part of the fifth level of ESL instruction designed for students whose native language is not English. Admission to the class is by placement testing, completion of ESL Level 4 or by teacher recommendation. The course meets two days a week, 6 hours a week for 16 weeks (including exams). The purpose of this level is to practice high intermediate level discussion and listening based on academic contexts. The course provides students with English language preparation to succeed at the college level and a comprehensive introduction to the American college. The focus of this course is a comprehensive introduction to the American educational system using the following study skills topics as the content for listening and discussion.

ESL 081 - Reading 1
Detailed Description
Level 5 Reading is a full semester high-intermediate/low-advanced academic sequence for students whose native language is not English. Admission to the class is by placement testing, successful completion of Level 4 or by teacher recommendation. ESL 081 meets once a week for 3 hours.
The general objective of 081 is to teach reading skills and expose students to authentic reading materials such as novels, newspapers, magazines, and journals. To help develop these skills, students will be expected to keep reading journals, do oral reports or a library project and handle approximately 500 - 700 pages of text (1 or 2 novels or equivalent materials).

ESL 091 - ESL Writing 1
Detailed Description
ESL 091 is a full semester academic writing course that is part of the Level 5 sequence designed for students whose native language is not English. Admission to the class is by placement testing, successful completion of ESL Level 4, or by teacher recommendation. The course meets once a week for 3 hours for 16 weeks (including exams). The purpose of this course is to help students express their ideas fluently in English and understand the writing process. It is also the goal of 091 to introduce you to a variety of expository writing, including a personal narrative, a traditional five paragraph essay, a review, and simple research.
