ESL 071 - Advanced Conversation and Culture
Detailed Description

Advanced Conversation and Culture reinforces and expands English communication skills.  This course enhances effective communication by increasing awareness of contemporaray American topics, encouraging and aiding students to express reactions to a new cultural environment, and by focusing on particular language needs of individuals

Activities common to level

  • Study and learn how to use idioms
  • Listen to taped conversations and stories
  • Listen to tapes stories and watch films
  • Read and discuss current newspapers and magazines
  • Oral reports
  • Group projects
  • Do interviews

ESL 080 - American English Pronunciation for ESL Speakers
Detailed Description

The objective of the course is to improve the intelligibility and fluency of the students´ spoken language.  The specific consonant and vowel sounds to be stressed in the course will vary according to the needs of the individual students and their countries of origin.

Activities common to level

  • Heavy emphasis on listening to, reproducing, and practicing the sound system of American English
  • Heavy emphasis on listening to, reproducing, and practicing stress and rapid speech patterns
  • Listening practice included taped radio and TV segments, interviews, talk shows, advertisements, and songs.
  • Several short presentations, ranging from one to five minutes
  • Small group interactions, based on tasks
  • Information-gap activities
