Union County College participates in the National Student Mathematics League. Currently 156 community colleges in the world compete in the examinations.
Our chapter participates on both an individual and team level. A team consists of five students, whose membership may change from exam to exam.
Participants take three one-hour exams during the course of the academic year. There are twenty questions on each exam, requiring a Precalculus background. These exams are given in three rounds. The first round is in November/December. The second round is in January/February and the final round is in March/April. Students enrolled in a credit course at UCC, whether on a part time or full time basis, who have completed Mathematical Analysis I (MAT 143) or higher are encouraged to participate. The top scorer nationally, who meets specific qualifications, receives a $3,000 scholarship to be used to continue his or her education at an accredited four-year institution when he or she transfers. The next nine highest-ranking individuals receive awards as well. The top five ranking individuals from UCC receive certificates. There are also team awards for the highest-ranking teams nationally and regionally. In addition to this, MATYCNJ grants an award to the highest ranking student attending a community college in New Jersey.
If you would like to participate in the League at UCC, contact the Director of the Student Mathematics League, Prof. Stanley Cohen, at ext. 4221 or email scohen@ucc.edu.
