   Academics - PNU 190   
Nursing Concepts is the first nursing theory course in the Licensed Practical Nursing program. The complete PNU 190 Syllabus will provide structure and an understanding to the course objectives.

Course Description

This course introduces the Practical Nursing student to the profession of nursing and the role of the LPN.  Basic concepts and trends in nursing practice and the health care delivery system will be discussed.  The integration of self-care and critical thinking principles into the nursing process will be a key focus.  Other essential elements of nursing practice will be presented, including communication, vital signs, and client teaching.  Students will practice and demonstrate beginning proficiency in the calculation of drug dosages and the use of medical terminology.  5 theory credit hours (4 Theory / 1 Clinical lab)

Student Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to: 

1.                  Discuss major historical events in the development of the nursing profession.

2.                  Discuss current trends affecting nursing and health care.

3.                  Compare the different types of nursing education preparation.

4.                  Discuss the current health care delivery system and the role of the LPN.

5.                  Discuss concepts of Orem’s Self-Care framework and their integration into nursing practice.

6.                  Describe the components and purpose of the nursing process and the integration of critical thinking.

7.                  Discuss the sociocultural needs (holistic dimensions) of clients and how they influence nursing care.

8.                  Describe basic communication techniques that may be used with clients from diverse backgrounds.

9.                  Discuss principles of client teaching and learning.

10.             Demonstrate the ability to perform basic nursing interventions, including dosage calculations for medication administration, and vital signs.

11.             Describe basic legal standards and ethical guidelines that influence nursing practice.

12.             Define the selected medical terminology that is used in nursing practice and documentation.

13.             Identify library and Internet sources and access selected nursing information for class discussion.
