PNU 211 Course Description
In this course the student focuses on meeting the holistic self-care needs of the adult client in the acute care setting. In collaboration with the clinical instructor and RN health team member, the student will be given the opportunity to demonstrate use of critical thinking skills in collecting subjective and objective information, prioritizing care, intervening in meeting client basic care needs, evaluating outcomes of care, and reporting and recording care. Concepts introduced in previous nursing courses are expanded and integrated into clinical and theory experiences. Emphasis in theory will be placed on more complex, acute medical-surgical health deviations, the assessment of signs and symptoms and recognition of medical and nursing interventions, including medication and nutrition therapies. Critical thinking skills will continue to be an avenue for student success in test-taking and clinical performance. Concepts of role transition and accountability will be discussed, as well as skills required for obtaining employment in a health care agency. Content reviews, focused testing, and a clinical practicum will assist the student to prepare for the NCLEX – PN Licensure Examination and the assumption of a position as a Licensed Practical Nurse. 12 credit hours per semester; 8 theory, 4 clinical
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of course student will:
1. Adapt the application of nursing process and critical thinking for care of adult clients and families from diverse multicultural backgrounds experiencing more complex health deviations.
2. Utilize communication skills that will contribute to the client’s ability to maintain or regain an optimum level of self-care.
3. Apply theoretical medical surgical nursing knowledge and information from other disciplines to assist the client in meeting multiple health deviation requisites.
4. Collaborate with other members within the health care environment to assist in meeting the client’s self-care needs.
5. Employ nursing measures that include all aspects of care within the practical nurse function and contribute to the client and family’s level of wellness within the acute care setting.
6. Recognize clients’ self-care priorities and how they are incorporated into the planning of care/multiple assignments.
7. Use opportunities and resources that are available for educational and professional growth.
8. Employ legal standards and ethical guidelines of practice to meet the self-care needs of clients and families in the acute care environment.
9. Incorporate the psychosocial needs of the client into the plan of care.
10. Present a teaching plan for a client, family, and/or community group that addresses the achievement of health deviation requisites.
11. Assume the role of a beginning practical nurse by demonstrating an appropriate demeanor and ability to provide/delegate safe and effective care to clients from diverse multicultural backgrounds.
12. Evaluate one’s own level of accountability and personal growth.
13. Integrate relevant and current information obtained through selective research of library, internet, and other professional sources into the implementation of the plan of care.
14. Prepare for employment opportunities as a LPN, including resume creation, interviewing techniques.
15. Access available nursing resources to implement a plan for ongoing study while preparing for the NCLEX –PN.
