GRANT ACTIVITIES

In addition to the grant activities listed below, the creation of an Associate's degree in nursing would complement the College's existing accredited and recognized healthcare training programs by supplementing coursework that can be directly applied to this occupation area. The components of Activity 5 support training (Objectives 1.3, 1.4), capacity building (Objectives 2.1, 2.3), and workforce needs (Objectives 3.1, 3.4, 3.5).
Activity 1:  To increase awareness and pursuit of health careers and job training opportunities, the College will:
  • Develop a health career information module
  • Hire a Career Specialist to conduct community outreach to increase awareness (among high school students and populations served by the One Stop Centers) of a wide range of health careers, academic requirements, and the prerequisite courses of study and to recruit appropriate candidates for training
  • Conduct outreach involving direct contact with more than 1,200 high school students
  • Expand promotion of the Bridge Program to attract increased enrollment for high school students to receive up to 12 college credits including foundation science courses and lab work, taught at UCC by UCC faculty, effectively enabling students to achieve a semester or more of advanced standing
  • Implement a broad dissemination and marketing plan (described on p. 15-16 of Grant Narrative) to raise awareness and to provide broad access to health career options
Activity 2:  To expand the EMT program, which serves as a feeder program to other allied health fields, such as the Paramedic Program and the Emergency Health Science degree, the College will:
  • Align the EMT curriculum to the high school block schedule that will enable EMT training of 150 high school seniors at the Academy of Allied Health Sciences
  • Purchase lab equipment and materials for use with the expanded EMT Program
  • Provide increased laboratory and clinical remediation opportunities made possible by the purchase of lab equipment and software, as well as tutors
  • Retain additional instructors and a part-time coordinator
  • Coordinate additional clinical sites for placement of the increased EMT students
  • Establish a Certificate of Achievement for the EMT Program, which would strengthen the career path with the Emergency Medical System and the College's Paramedic program and Associate's degree in Emergency Health Science
Activity 3:  To expand enrollment in the Practical Nursing Program, the College will:
  • Create a weekend/evening program to support the practical nursing program that will train an additional 85-100 new students
  • Increase recruitment efforts to attract bilingual students of Hispanic, African, Caribbean, and Asian descent into the nursing program
  • Coordinate with hospital partners for placement for clinical and practicum experience
  • Hire staff (Adjunct Faculty and Lab Skills Coordinator) to support instruction for additional students
  • Purchase necessary lab equipment
  • Achieve 90% passing rate on the LPN licensure exam
  • Assist graduates to obtain 90% employment or pursue further education and training in the nursing field within 4 months of obtaining licensure
Activity 4:  To improve retention of students in the Practical Nursing program, the College will:
  • Provide supplemental mentoring and tutoring specific to nursing content to increase academic success and retention
  • Implement strategies to increase retention and completion of health training programs
  • Offer tuition/scholarship support to trainees to ensure their ability to enroll and complete the practical nursing training program
  • Leverage support from hospital partners to provide tuition payback to increase retention
  • Offer career counseling to encourage completion of Practical Nursing Program
Activity 5:  To develop and implement strategies to encourage LPNs to complete an Associate's degree and increase the transition from LPN to RN and BSN programs, the College will:
  • Identify obstacles to transiting from LPN to Associate's degree
  • Provide career counseling to encourage PN students to transition to UCC's Associate degree program
  • Identify obstacles impeding transition from LPN to RN
  • Provide counseling to encourage LPNs to pursue a career path to obtain RN licensure through a diploma, Associate's degree or Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
  • Develop curriculum to facilitate smoother transition to an RN program
Throughout the grant period and continuing thereafter, healthcare providers will work with the College to develop and enhance the Pathway for Healthcare Careers by providing:
  • Assistance in developing core competencies for specific jobs
  • Clinical sites for training
  • Recommendations of tutors, mentors, and adjunct faculty
  • Hiring and Employment opportunities
  • Information on current and future industry needs
