Honors

Only matriculated students will be considered for honors. Matriculated students carrying 15 credit hours during one semester are eligible for the Vice President for Academic Affairs List if they attain an average of 3.00 with no grade lower than "C", and for the President's List if they achieve an average of 3.50, with no grade lower than "B". Matriculated students carrying 12 credit hours during one semester are eligible for the Vice President for Academic Affairs List if they attain an average of 3.25 with no grade lower than "C", and for the President's List if they achieve an average of 3.75 with no grade lower than "B". Matriculated part-time students will be considered for the Vice President for Academic Affairs List if they have earned at least 12 credit hours and have attained a minimum cumulative average of 3.00. Once this minimum is met, part-time students must carry no less than 6 credit hours and attain a semester average of 3.25 with no grade lower than "C" for the Vice President for Academic Affairs List and 3.75 with no grade lower than "B" for the President's List. Students who maintain the above averages throughout the two-year period of their attendance and who meet all other requirements are highly recommended for transfer to four-year institutions to complete requirements for a bachelor's degree. up

Honors Recognition

Honors Scholars are students who, at the time of graduation, have maintained a 3.5 GPA, completed honors contracts in at least four courses, and completed all four core Honors courses. Honors Certificate students are those who, at the time of graduation, have maintained a 3.25 GPA, completed contracts in at least two courses, and completed at least one core Honors course. up

Honors Designation

Students may also complete Honors contracts in their course work. Honors contracts are agreements with the course instructor for additional work beyond the normal course requirements. Such contracts are designed to intellectually challenge the student in terms of critical analysis and application of the course material. Contracts must be approved in advance by the Honors Director.  Courses for which contracts are successfully completed are designated as Honors courses on the student's transcript.

The Honors Designation allows students to complete an academic program other than the Liberal Arts/ Honors Program and gain Honors Designation if they meet the standards of that program and the Honors Designation requirements:

  1. complete eight honors courses or sections;
  2. maintain at least a 3.2 GPA;
  3. include PHIH 150 (HRS) (Logic and Critical Thinking) and ENGH 150 (HRS) (Writing the Research paper for Honors Students) in the eight Honors courses or sections taken.

The advantages of Honors Designation include classes with smaller enrollment than normal, Honors designation at graduation, individual faculty mentors, and developing critical thinking, problem solving, self-motivating, and communication skills that help students act responsibly in the world and transfer to select four-year colleges. up
