Make a Difference in the Life of a Child: Teach
The NPTNJ program is established as a Statewide consortium among New Jersey City University, collaborating NJ community colleges and affiliated school districts in New Jersey. The program is designed to provide alternate route education certification programs to qualified candidates as part of their collective response to statewide and local needs for certified teachers.
Students/candidates for the program who elect graduate credit and successfully complete the NPTNJ program will be offered 15 NJCU graduate credits which in turn can be applied to the first 15 credits of NJCU's Master of Arts in Teaching degree program, upon acceptance to the program. Those who elect certification-only and successfully complete the program will be awarded a Certificate of Completion by Union County College. All students who successfully complete the program and related NJ Department Of Education (NJ DOE) requirements will be eligible for alternate route certification through NJCU as agent for the NJ DOE.
Admission Requirements:
- 2.75 Undergraduate GPA and appropriate Undergraduate Major
- Passing Score on Praxis II exam
- Promise of Employment from School District
- Certificate of Eligibility
Applicable certifications:
- Elementary (K-5)
- Middle School (grades 5-8)
***To teach middle school you must have two CE’s, one in Elementary Education and one in Elementary Education with Specialization in Math, Science, Social Studies, English/Language Arts, or World Languages (Spanish, French, etc.)

- Earth Science
- Social Studies
- Modern Language
Program Highlights:
- Program available at your local Community College
- 12-month graduate-level certification program
- Phase I
Summer
- Phase II Fall
- Intensive summer preparation for full-time teaching in September
- Guided in-classroom observations
- Permanent NJ certification upon completion of program and applicable NJ DOE requirements
- Courses transfer to a Master of Arts in Teaching degree at New Jersey City University.

NEW! Anyone applying for a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) after October 30, 2009 is required to complete the New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey Introduction to Teaching 24-hour Pre-service Program.

This is a non-credit course with 20 hours of class work and a 4-hour classroom observation requirement. Upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate, as required by the NJ Department of Education, which documents their program completion. The certificate must be included in their CE application packet.
