Financial Information - Academic Progress Policy

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for Student Financial Aid

All students receiving student financial aid from federal and state sources must be making satisfactory academic progress at Union County College. Students shall be monitored for satisfactory academic progress once a year, after the Spring Semester.

  • Quantitative Measure for Federal Student Aid Eligibility
Students must complete a minimum number of credits toward graduation requirements each academic year in which they are enrolled at Union County College. Below are minimum academic progress charts that fulltime students must adhere to: up

    Minimum Progress

    End of Full-Time

    Semester Enrolled      1    2     3     4     5     6
    Credits Completed     0   12   24   36   48   64

The progression required for less than full-time students is made by equating semesters as listed below to full-time and applying the chart:

    Full-time (12 or more credits)                   1.0 semester
    Three quarter-time (9-11 credits)             0.75 semester
    Half-time (6-8 credits)                             0.50 semester
    Less than half-time (1-5 credits)               0.25 semester

Students taking non-credit remedial courses or English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) courses must follow the progression of the quantitative chart indicated above. Even though students do not earn college credits toward graduation, students receive pass or fail grades for these courses. Remedial and ESL courses are evaluated for academic progress by reviewing remedial and ESL coursework attempted against remedial and ESL coursework passed. Once the remedial or ESL student enters into college-level credits (credits earning qualitative points), the student will follow the quantitative chart from the beginning. up

    Maximum Time Frame for Completion

The maximum time-frame a student may attend to complete an academic program may not exceed 150 percent of the published length of the program. This will be calculated by comparing the total number of college-level courses the student attempted against the number of college-level courses required to complete the
    program. up

Qualitative Measure for Federal Student Aid Eligibility

  • The satisfactory academic progress policy requires students to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA as follows:

Students who have attempted 12 College level credits are considered to be regular students. These students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 after attending the equivalent of two full-time semesters and thereafter. up

    Withdrawals/Incomplete Courses/Repeated Courses

If a student withdraws after the drop/add period during a given semester, the course credits will be inclueded in the count of courses attempted. Exception to this is if a student is approved for a medical or military level. An incomplete course is treated the same as a failed courses. A repeated course is only counted toward progression if the repeated course is replacing a previously failed course. up

    EOF State Aid Academic Progress

EOF students enrolled full- time at Union County College may be eligible to receive 8 semesters of payment to complete an associate degree as long as they are making satisfactory academic progress. (N.J.A.C. 9A:11-2.8e) Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requires the student to successfully complete institution designated remedial/developmental courses within the first two semesters of enrollment. Beginning with the third semester and with each subsequent semester students must earn a minimum of 12 college credits. Part-time Pilot students eligibility will be pro-rated accordingly. up

    Procedures for Appealing

Students not meeting the minimum standards for Satisfactory Academic Progress are ineligible for student aid. However, students have the right to appeal for aid by submitting an appeal, in writing, to the Financial Aid Appeals Committee. If the appeal is approved, the student's financial aid will be reinstated. Appeal Forms are available in the Financial Aid
    Office. up
