LISTSERVS/DISCUSSION GROUPS

Listservs and discussion groups are important information-sharing venues that complement traditional sources (books or journals, magazines, etc.). Listservs are e-mail group messaging systems based on a specific topic or subject-- listservs route e-mail messages to all subscribers or members of a list. There are no costs for subscribing. Joining a listserv can give you an opportunity to stay ahead of the curve in your field because often it is “on-list” where cutting edge discussions within your area of interest or expertise take place. Though most lists are open to the general public, there are highly specialized lists that have restricted access regarding participation. Once a list receives your request to join, instructions will be sent to your e-mail account explaining the list’s rules and policies.

Below are a few related to emergency medical services.

ACERT Emergency Responder (ACERT Emergency Responder Discussion)

Emergency Responder is a discussion list for anyone in or interested in the field of emergency response, ambulance care, first aid and other pre-hospital care. Visit http://www.lsoft.com/scripts/wl.exe?SL1=ACERT&H=MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU for subscription instructions.

Compassion Fatigue

This list was developed to serve as a virtual community for care-givers, emergency responders and others who provide care to suffering individuals, families and communities. Visit https://lists.fsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/compassionfatigue for subscription instructions.

EMS-L: online discussion of medical direction, oversight, pre-hospital and out-of hospital treatment protocols. Visit http://www.ncemi.org/cgi-ncemi/edsubscriber.pl for subscription instructions.

PHTLS: online discussion for those interested in Pre-hospital trauma and life support. There are two listservs, one for a student audience which is open subscription, one for PHTLS instructors only. Visit http://www.naemt.org/PHTLS/resourceLibrary/listserv.htm#listserv for subscription instructions.

WEB

The World Wide Web contains many useful sites, but because not all are equally credible and accurate, their evaluation becomes an important part of the research process. The two sites listed below are designed to help you evaluate what you find on the Web:
