From May 16, 2008 through to June 26, 2008, the exhibition, “Howard Nathenson, Recent Color Still Lifes” will be on display at Union County College’s MacKay Library in Cranford, NJ. This solo exhibition is comprised of color photography by NJ artist Howard Nathenson. All of Nathenson’s photographic work is, “… based on my feeling that people relate their surroundings to their own and other, perhaps imagined, human dramas.”

Nathenson uses chiaroscuro in his photographs, strong and dramatic dark and light which adds mystery to each of his works. He uses the still life setting as a stage and the objects he photographs, either natural, machine made or hand made, as a metaphor for nature and human form. He mainly photographs fruit, vegetables, fabrics, vessels, rocks, vines, or any small piece of nature.

To accomplish chiaroscuro and the form he wants in his works, it is necessary for Nathenson to use a photographic technique that emphasizes texture and detail. Therefore, he uses large format scanned negatives and transparencies, as well as high-resolution digital camera files. He prints his images as inkjet prints on archival, 100% rag, acid free Hahnehuhle printing paper using archival Vivera pigment inks.

In 2007, he had a solo exhibition in Ft. Collins, Colorado at The Photography Center, entitled, “Black and White Still Lifes”. In 2005, in Plainfield, NJ, he had a solo exhibition at Swain Galleries entitled, “Color Still Lifes, a premiere”. In 2007, he also participated in a group exhibition entitle, “Artists Who Teach Art”, which was held at the Mayo Performance Center, in Morristown, NJ.

His works can be found in The Neuberger Museum, The Bergen Museum, The Prudential Corporation, Johnson and Johnson Corporation, Kohn, Pederson and Fox Architects, and Bloomingdales in New York City.

The opening exhibition will be held on Friday, May 16, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Tomasulo Gallery, located on the College’s Cranford campus at 1033 Springfield Avenue.
