September 2009:  James Casciano Named UCC Men's Basketball Coach.

Jim Casciano
Head Coach, Men’s Basketball
Union County College

Jim Casciano comes to Union County College with more than two decades of college head coaching experience and with the rare distinction of having directed teams at every level of four-year colleges and also at the two-year level.

Most recently, Casciano coached at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), where he coached the Highlanders during their transition to NCAA Division I status. Adding this layer to his résumé, Casciano has led a two-year program (Valley Forge Military), an NAIA program (Castleton State), and all three NCAA levels—Division III (King’s, PA); Division II (St. Michael’s, VT; and NJIT), and Division I (NJIT).

When NJIT was at the Division II level, Casciano revitalized the Highlander’s program just as he had at four other head coaching stops. In his second season at NJIT (2002-03), the Highlanders won the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship and were finalists in the ECAC Division II Tournament. That season’s 18 wins were the most in NJIT’s Division II era. The prior season, Casciano was selected Co-CACC Coach of the Year, after guiding the Highlanders to second place in the league.

Immediately before coming to NJIT, Casciano’s King’s College Monarchs won the 2001 ECAC Division III South Championship. The Monarchs also earned their first Middle Atlantic Conference playoff berth since 1993-94. After amassing 12 combined wins in his first three seasons, the Monarchs turned the corner in his fourth year (13-11; first winning season in six years) and then improved to 19-9 in 2000-01. The turnaround at King’s was typical of Casciano’s career that has seen him revitalize struggling programs.

In his first head coaching position at Castleton (VT) State in 1982-83, he tied the school record for victories (14) and earned a berth in the NAIA tournament.

Next, he moved within Vermont to Division II St. Michael’s College. After two rebuilding years, his 1985-86 squad went 19-10 and Casciano was named Mid-East Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year. In 1986-87, the Purple Knights of St. Michael’s won the MCC championship, posted a 20-11 record (SMC’s first 20-win season in 12 years), and earned the program’s first NCAA tournament berth in 20 years. The following year St. Michael’s was ranked first in the nation in Division II by several preseason publications, including Sports Illustrated. Casciano completed four consecutive winning seasons while at St. Michael’s.

Returning to the head coaching ranks in 1993, Casciano took over the program at Valley Forge Military College in Wayne, PA, compiling a 50-19 record and sending five players to Division I scholarships in three seasons.

Casciano began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant to the legendary Rollie Massimino at Villanova. He also assisted at Delaware, Washington & Lee, Old Dominion, and Radford. Casciano played college basketball at Drexel University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. The Bridgeport, PA, native resides in Basking Ridge, NJ, with his wife, Daphne.
