Student Services - A Few Words About The Audience
Whom one is writing for is as important as what one is writing about.  As a writer, your readers are your audience, and adjusting the tone and language of your writing for your audience is an integral part of the writing process.  An angry letter to the editor of a newspaper about its position on gun control would certainly differ in overall mood from a letter to a prospective employer about a job for which you wanted to be hired.  Writing a research paper on the Renaissance to be presented to your fellow students and your teacher in an Art History class would likely entail the use of very formal language, while an essay written about a pop music concert you attended might work well if its language were a bit informal.  (Be advised, however, that as a general rule, it is wise to avoid colloquialisms or slang in your writing.)
The writer must think about the audience when writing, and customize the language and tone to fit the readers.
