Student Services - The Writing Process
A piece of writing is not simply a finished product that a writer creates and someone else reads.  It represents a series of activities that comprises what is known as the writing process; it includes prewriting activities designed to generate ideas (freewriting, brainstorming), focusing, planning, sometimes researching, writing the first draft, revising, editing, proofreading, and so on.  There are no set rules or formulas for how one should proceed when writing, and something that works for one writing assignment may not work well for another.  It is up to the individual writer to develop his or her own approach to each writing project.
It is important to remember that the writing process is always evolving and changing as the writer works.  However, there are some useful strategies, some of which will be explored here, that can help the writer achieve his or her goals.
