Sophomore Xavier Ysabel has been selected to the second team All GSAC and All Region XIX as an outfielder.

The Owls led 2-1 thru 4 innings before 4 unearned in the seventh propelled Ocean CC to a 9-3 win in game one of the best of three series.Brian Piccola took the loss for the Owls although he allowed only 2 earned runs in 6-plus innings. David Steinman went 3 for4 with an RBI and Lawrence Davis went 2 for 2 with a BB.

The Owls season ended with a game 2 loss to OCC in the best of three series.UCC took an early third inning lead before Ocean scored 3 times in the third and 4 more in the fourth to open up a 7-1 lead and roll to the 12-4 win.Steve Tansey and Kristian Cortizo each had 2 hits and Matt Parman added a sac fly, run scored and a pair of BB.

The Owls finish the season at 17-19.


Wednesday April 29, 2009: Owls Take Win To Move Into Playoffs.

The Owls came alive in their win over RVCC to finish 17-17 in the regular season and qualify for the Region XIX Division III baseball tournament. After a 3-9 start, the Owls turned it around , winning 7 of their last 9 to qualify.
Louis Castillo pitched six innings to gather his sixth win on the season. Leo Geronimo went 4 for 4 with 3 RBI's and Kristian Cortizo contributed 3 hits and 4RBI. Multiple hit games were had by Xavier Ysabel, Steve Tansey and Jamie Kallinosis. Jeremy Antoine also chipped in 3 RBI.
Xavier Ysabel was named to the Region XIX and Garden Sate Athletic Conference second team as an outfielder.
The Owls (#5 Seed) will travel to Ocean CC (#4) for a best of three this weekend in the first round.



UCC HAS QUALIFIED FOR THE NJCAA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT.  THEY ARE TIED FOR 4TH PLACE WITH OCEAN CC AND WILL PLAY IN A TIE BREAKER TOURNAMENT DOUBLEHEADER ON SATURDAY MAY 2, 2009 AT 12:00pm @ OCEAN COUNTY COLLEGE



Tuesday April 28, 2009: Owls Score 9 in 2nd inning to win 16-9.

The Owls erupted for a nine run second inning to take an early 10-2 lead in route to the 16-4 win.  The big second was highlighted by a trio of 2 run doubles by Jimmy Guarino , Kristian Cortizo, and Mike Patricco. Xavier Ysabel, Leo Geronimo, and Matt Parman also contributed with a pair of RBI"S. Lee Risko, making his first start of the season, pitched seven innings allowing just two earned runs for the win.The Owls are now 16-17.  A win on Wednesday against Raritan Valley CC would qualify UCC for the 2009 Region XIX Tournament.

Monday April 27, 2009:  Owls down Bloomfield CC to close gap for a Championship Run.

The Owls stormed back from deficits of 5-0 and 10-9 to take the victory. Leo Geronimo ripped a bases clearing double in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 10-9 deficit. Matt Parman had a two run double in the third and Jimmy Guarino and Kristian Cortizo each had three hits on the afternoon. Cortizo also pitched 4 innings of relief allowing only 2 runs. Ryan Bobenchik (2-0) got the win in relief and Louis Castillo picked up the save. The Owls are 15-17 and are closing in on securing a berth in the region XIX tournament.

Sunday April 26, 2009:  Split with Sussex CC in Doubleheader.

Owls tied their season high for runs scored. Stewart Cook pitched 5 and 2/3 to earn the win and was supported by several huge offensive performances. Jamie Kallinosis belted a grand slam (3rd homer of season) in the first inning to set the stage. Jimmy Guarino (3 for 4 4runs), Kristian Cortizo (3 hits 5 runs), Leo Geronimo (3 hits/ 2 Doubles) and Xavier Ysabel (5 for 5--5 singles 3 RBI) led the way.

The Owls battled back from a 15-4 deficit to send the tying run to the plate in the last inning before falling 15-11.  UCC received a scare in the second when starting pitcher Bryan Bellante was struck by a line drive and was transported by ambulance to the hospital for observation. Xavier Ysabel, Louis Castillo, Steve Tansey and Jeremy Antoine all had 2 hit games for the Owls.

Saturday April 25, 2009: UCC takes 1 drop 1 against Ocean CC in the first weekend Doubleheader.

Leo Geronimo went 2 for 3 with a double and 3RBI and was joined with 2 hit games from Mike Patricco (3 runs scored), Steve Tansey and David Steinman, The Owls erupted for 5 runs in the 4th to erase a 3-2 deficit. Louis Castillo picked up the win (5-3) and Ryan Bobenchik picked up his first save with 2 scoreless innings of relief.

Game 2  Ocean 7 UCC 2

OCC scored 5 times in the top of the seventh to break a 2-2 tie and earn the win. Kristian Cortizo and David Steinman had RBI singles and Brian Piccola pitched a complete game while taking the loss (7 K's 4ER). The Owls are 13-16 and 6-10 in region XIX.

Sunday April 19, 2009: UCC Bounces Back to sweep 2 from Delaware County College (Pa.)

UCC scored a run on an outfield error in the bottom of the eighth of game 1 to secure an 8-7 victory in Cranford. Ryan Bobenchik (2-0) scored the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Mike Patricco, Jeremy Antoine, and Steve Tansey each had a pair of hits and Kristian Cortizo socked his first homer of the season.

Leo Geronimo and David Steinman each drove in three runs to pace the Owls. Kristian Cortizo was 2 for 2 with three walks and 4 runs scored.  Mike Patricco pitched 6 innings to score his first victory of the season.

The Owls are 12-15 overall and 5-9 in Region XIX.

Saturday April 18, 2009: Camden sweeps UCC 17-3 11-0 in Doubleheader.

In Game 1 of a 2 game stint Camden erupted for an 8 run second inning to break the game open early. Steve Tansey and Xavier Ysabel had RBI singles in a 17-3 loss.

In Game 2 Camden did not let up against the Owls scoring 5 runs in the first inning.  The Owls could not muster 1 run in the 11-0 loss. David Steinman had a pair of hits for the Owls.

Thursday April 16, 2009: Owls improving after important win.

Doubles by Matt Parman and Mike Patricco each drove in a run in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie and allow the Owls to squeak by FDU 6-5.  Stewart Cook pitched the first 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on three hits. David Steinman got the win with three innings of relief, allowing 2 runs.  Left fielder Jamie Kallinosis had a stellar day defensively, throwing 2 runners out at the plate and taking away a would-be walk-off 3-run HR for the final out of the game.  Patricco was 3 for 4 on the day and is hitting .385 on the season (25 for 65).  The Owls will Travel to Camden on Saturday April 18, 2009 for a noon doubleheader and will play Delaware CC on Sunday in Cranford at noon.
The Owls are 10-13 overall.


Wednesday April 15, 2009: Owls lose by 1 in 10 inning game.

Despite accumulating 18 hits, the Owls fell to Sussex 9-8 in 10 innings. The Owls led 7-3 into the eighth before Sussex erupted for 4 runs to knot the score at 7-7. A  two out RBI single by Matt Parman gave the Owls an 8-7 lead in the tenth, but a two out bases loaded single off Mike Patricco in the bottom of the inning lead to the Sussex win. Brian Piccola pitched 7 and 2/3 innings for UCC with 5 strikeouts.Steve Tansey was 4 for 6 with a double and 3 runs scored for UCC.  Jimmy Guarino, Xavier Ysabel, Mike Patricco, Jamie Kallinosis and Krystian Cortizo all recorded a pair of hits.

Tuesday April 14, 2009: Owls defeat the Military Academy 8-3.

UCC defeated USMAPS 8-3 to improve to 9-12 in a rain swept 9 innings at Walsh Field.  Xavier Ysabel continued his torrid week with another 3 hit performance, driving in 1 and scoring 2 runs.  He also swiped his team leading stolen base.  Mike Patricco also added 2 singles and a pair of RBI's and David Steinman drove in three with a 2 run single in the second and a sacrifice fly in the third.Bryan Ballante improved to 2-2 on the mound going the first 5 innings with 4 strikeouts.  Mike Patricco and Ryan Bobenchik combined for 4 innings of scoreless relief.  The three pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts on the day.

Monday April 13, 2009:  Owls lose battle to Jersey Blues.

UCC held a 6-2 lead in the 5th inning vs. Brookdale CC, ranked fifth in the nation in Div. III baseball, before bowing 14-7 at Walsh Field in Cranford.Xavier Ysabel had a huge day at the plate going 4 for 5 with a triple, #RBI's, 2 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases.  Xavier is hitting .365 for the season with 17 RBI and 12 stolen bases.  Leo Geronimo also chipped in with a single, double and 2 RBI's.

Thursday April 9, 2009: UCC splits with Northampton CC.

UCC splits with Northampton CC (PA) in our first ever meeting against the newcomer to RegionXIX.

UCC spotted NCC a 6-0 lead into the fourth.  Jamie Kallinosis (3 for 4) belted a three run homer (2nd of the season) in the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3.  UCC had the tying runs on in the last inning before falling. Mike Patricco, Steve Tansey, and Matt Parman also registered a pair of hits.

Mike Patricco singled up the middle with runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 4-3 deficit and ensure a walk-off 5-4 win to salvage a split in the DH. The Owls rebounded after squandering a 3-0 lead into the fifth.

Bryan Bellante went 6 and 1/3 IP allowing just three earned runs.  Ryan Bobenchik got the win with 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief.  Ryan also pitched a scoreless 1 and 2/3 in game 1.  In 8 relief appearances in 2009, Bobenchik has held hitters to a .118 avg. (4 for 34) with an ERA of 1.74.


Wednesday April 8, 2009: UCC wins its fourth straight overall and in GSAC Region 19 competition. 7-9 overall 4-4 GSAC

The Owls recorded their first ever season sweep of Middlesex County College 17-7. UCC's bats were extremely lively putting 18 hits on the board and scoring 17 runs in 8 offensive innings. Louis Castillo went 6 innings to improve his record to 4-1 while Jimmy Guarino went 2 for 3 with a 2 run homerun shot in the 6th driving in 3RBI's for the day and scoring 4 runs. Steve Tansey went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI's, Xavier Ysabel who has very productive for the Owls had a 2 run triple in the 2nd inning, and Mike Patricco was 3 for 5 driving 4 RBI's, Jamie Kallinosis was 4 for 5 with 2 RBI's, and Kristen Cortizo was 4for4 with 3 RBI's.

Sunday April 5, 2009:  UCC Sweeps Cumberland.

A rainy day make-up proved to be a positive for the Owls.  Game 1 of a double header saw the owls come out on top 8-3. Brian Piccola pitched his 3rd complete game of the season giving up 3 runs and 4 strike outs in 7 innings.  Leo Geronimo drove in three runs on a 2 run single and a sacrifice fly and Louis Castillo had 2 hits, Steve Tansey and Mike Patricco scored 2 runs.

In game 2 the Owls were warmed up, scoring 15 runs to Cumberland's 8, Brian Ballante pitched 6 innings recording 5 strikeouts.  At the end of 4 innings the Owls controlled the game 13-0 with Leo Geronimo, Steve Tansey, and Matt Parman driving in 2 runs each.

Thursday April 2, 2009: UCC Wins Against Middlesex 10-6.

The Owls came out of the dugout determined to get back to winning. UCC jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third on a 2 run single by Xavier Ysabel , RBI double by Mike Patricco, and RBI triple by Steve Tansey. Kristian Cortizo drove in four runs on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly. Jeremy Antoine and Jamie Kallinosis also chipped in a pair of singles and combined for three runs scored.

Louis Castillo pitched 8 strong innings allowing four runs while scattering 8 hits to improve his record to 3-1.  UCC is now 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the GSAC.

Tuesday March 31, 2009: Owls get clipped in the 9th.

The Owls were unable to maintain a 1 run lead when Burlington CC scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning to take the game 10-8. Xavier Ysabel drove in three with a two run double in the 4th and a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Ucc is now 3-9, and will play Middlesex CC in an away match on Thursday April2, 2009 at 3:00pm.  The venue was moved due to field and weather conditions.

Thursday March 26, 2008:  Owls drop to 3-8.

Louis Castillo, who pitched a very competitive game for 6 and a half innings, kept the Owls in position to take the lead.  When he left the game the Owls were trailing 7-4 to Bergen Community College.  However, after that point Bergen broke open a 7 point lead to win 11-4.  Jeremy Antoine went 2 for 4 win a double and 2 runs, while red hot Xavier Ysabel also went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles an, rbi, and a run.

Tuesday March 24, 2009: Owls lose to Jersey Blues.

The baseball Team had a rough outing against Brookdale Community College in Lincroft yesterday.  The Owls tried to rally around a 4 run 6th inning when Matt Parmen hit a 2 RBI shot, but BCC controlled the game winning 14-4.  Stewart Cook booked 3 innings of relief giving up 3 runs.  The Owls are now 3-7 and 0-3 in  Region 19.  UCC will play Thursday March 26, 2009 in Cranford at 3:30pm against Bergen CC.

Sunday March 22: Owls Fall to Gloucester CC.

The Owls lost both games in a doubleheader road trip.  The score in the first game was 9-2 in favor of Gloucester, Kristian Cortizo drove in both runs for UCC.  Gloucester blanked UCC 8-0 in the second game, Stewart Cook and Ryan Bobenchik were the losing pitchers respectfully and Lee Risko came in for relief.
The Owls drop to 3-6.

Saturday March 21, 2009: UCC sweeps Jamestown CC (NY) 8-2, 2-0 behind outstanding complete game performances by Louis Castillo and Brian Piccola

In game 1 of a doubleheader the owls erased an early 2 run deficit with 6 runs in the 3rd, highlighted by a leadoff triple by Jeremy Antoine an RBI doubles by Steinman and Patricco. Luis Castillo pitched 7 innings, giving up 2 runs and 5 hits, and recorded 3 strikeouts.In game 2, Jamie Kallinosis belted a solo homer in the fourth and also helped keep the score at 2-0 by throwing a runner out at the plate to end the fifth. Brian Piccola pitched 7 innings, giving up no runs and 2 hits, while recording 3 strikeouts.  Owls have improved to 3-4.  On a side note the victory in the second game was Coach Mark Domashinski's 100 career win with the owls.  Congratulations!


Wednesday March 18, 2009:  Baseball Drops Game to Adirondack County College.

The Baseball Team continues their slow start to the season with a 5-2 loss to Adirondack County College.  Lee Risko and Leo Geronimo each had an RBI and Mike Patricco pitched 5 innings recording 7 strikeouts and giving up 2 hits.

Monday March 16, 2009: Baseball having slow start with first home loss.

The Baseball Team had their home opener yesterday against Bronx Community College. UCC had hoped to score some runs early in the game as their bats were making effective contact with the ball, but the Owls had to battle back from a 2nd inning deficit of 13-0 to drop the game 10-15. Xavier Ysabel went 3 for 5, 2RBI's and 2 runs, Steve Tansey went 3 for 5 with 3 doubles, and Jeremy Antoine went 3 for 4 and scored 3 runs. The Owls will be in action again on Tuesday March 17, 2009 at 3:30pm as they host Adirondack Community College.

Sunday March 15, 2009: Owls travel to Maryland.

The Owls continued their kickoff weekend by traveling to Prince George in Maryland for another doubleheader. Prince George won the first game 7-4, While Kristian Cortizio went 2 for 3 with a double, David Steinman had an RBI double in the first, and Brian Piccola pitched a complete game for UCC.

The second game was halted after 2 innings of play because of rain and wet field conditions. UCC had a 4-1 lead at that point after Ysabel drove in three runs before the stoppage.

 Saturday March 14, 2009: Owls start season on a weekend trip:

The Owls started their season by splitting a double header at Pennsylvania’s Williamson Trade. UCC won game 1 by a score of 14-3, Louis Castillo pitched 5 scoreless innings, 3 strikeouts and 3 hits, Xavier Ysabel went 3 for 5, an RBI, a run and 2 stolen bases. Steve Tansey scored 2 RBI’s in the first inning, Jamie Kallinosis went 3 for 6 and 4 RBI’s, and Lawrence Davis went 2 for with 3 RBI’s.

Williamson Trade recorded a 5-4 win over UCC in the second game, after the Owls let a 4-3 lead go after the 6th inning. Stewart Cook pitched 5 innings and Mike Patricco had 2 RBI’s and a double in the 4th inning.

2009 Baseball Season Preview

The UCC Owls Baseball Team will kick off its 2009 campaign on Saturday March 14 with a weekend trip to Williamson Trade School (PA) and Prince Georges Community College (MD). Lehigh-Carbon CC will come to Shane Walsh Field in Nomahegan Park- Cranford Campus- on Monday March 16 for the home opener.

The Owls return 5 players from the 2008 squad. Pitcher Louis Castillo, 1B Lawrence Davis, and OF's Xavier Ysabel, Jamie Kallinosis, and Jeremy Antoine will help anchor several talented newcomers including P/3B David Steinman (Dayton HS), 2B Steve Tansey (Roselle Park HS), P Brian Piccola (Scotch Plains HS), SS Kristian Cortizo (Union Catholic HS), 1B Leo Geronimo (Elizabeth HS), and P/IF Bryant Scantlebury (Union HS).

Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) play begins on March 19 when the Owls travel to Middlesex CC in Edison.
