Saturday March 7, 2009: The Owls end their perfect season unexpectedly.
The Ladies traveled to the Community College of Rhode Island to play for the District title and an opportunity to move and play for a national title. The Owls started the game with a positive outlook, but by halftime that outlook was getting cloudy due to CCRI holding a 39-35 lead. The Owls refused to let the game get away from them, challenging CCRI the whole time. However, when the final horn went off the Owls dream season had taken an abrupt turn for the worse. The Community College of Rhode Island, a team that had eliminated the Owls twice in previous seasons from moving onto a National title game, had done that once again. The final score was 65-63 in favor of CCRI. That did not stop the owls from posting impressive stats from; Crystal Harris with 16 points and 16 rebounds, Martyna Ruminska who had 12 points, and 4 rebounds, and Bobbi Van Fleet finishing with 8 points and 8 rebounds.

UCC success has a rhyme and a reason
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
To be champs is what we seek
The heart of champs is what we speak
It takes hard work everyday
But with it we'll have our way
No one believed, but now they do
Let's reveal the magic we can do
- Eboni Harris, No. 14, in tribute to her undefeated team
Head coach Cheryl Bell and her assistant, Tracey Napoleon, can barely keep from smiling when they describe the current Union County College women's basketball team as "special."
It has a double meaning for the coaches, who shake their heads in bemusement just thinking about all the personalities, such as poet/guard Eboni Harris, who are gathered on a team that enters the postseason with a 25-0 record following a 90-84 victory over Burlington (26-4) yesterday, and is ranked No. 8 nationally among Division 2 junior colleges.
"I call them `special,' and that's a good thing," Napoleon said. "They're all good kids, so it's the kind of team you wouldn't mind taking on the road to a national tournament."
Everything they have done on the court so far has been pretty "special," but it's hard to tell from the players, who perceived a lack of respect as they sought to become the first team in school history to complete an undefeated regular season.
"We're the only team in the state of New Jersey that's undefeated," said Kianna Williamson, a sophomore forward out of East Orange Campus. "But nobody respects us. The boys (at Union) get more respect, and their season isn't as good as ours."
Union, which won the Garden State Athletic Conference and the Region 19 playoff title last season, didn't crack the top 10 nationally until this past week. But Williamson and her teammates can blame only themselves for those who doubt the team's talent. The Lady Owls, who normally press and run the entire game, are putting up 81 points per game and allowing 50.9. That's a 30-point gap.
"They look at our scores, and they just think that we don't play good teams," said guard Quiana Trawick, a product of University High in Newark. "Because our defense is so good, the scores make it look like we don't have much competition."
Union held on to beat Burlington, and has had a couple other close calls. It won at home over Burlington, 81-77, on Dec. 6 and edged Genesee of New York, 59-57, on Jan. 17. But the margin of victory is usually in the double digits for UCC, which moves on to seek its third straight Region 19 title as the No. 1 seed.
"Our motto is: We can only beat ourselves," said 6-3 center Crystal Harris, who led the team with averages of 14.8 points and 12.6 rebounds per game going into the game against Burlington. "Nobody on our team is going to score 20 points a game because we have so much talent, and we share the ball. If I see someone wide open, I'm going to throw her the ball. No one on this team shoots to put up their own numbers. On any given night, any player can step up. We think we're underrated. That's why we're still hungry for more."
Donna Herran, the retired Union coach who counts Bell and Napoleon among her many former players, knows the history of the women's program well. Herran handled coaching duties at the Cranford-based college from 1975 through `99, a good stretch as the co-coach with Fred Perry. Herran took sole possession when Perry retired and guided the program into the national tournament with a 29-5 mark in 1995-96 and then again with a 29-3 record in 1996-97.
"This group is the best I've ever seen at Union," Herran said. "My style was defense and slow the ball down. Talk about the game passing you by, I couldn't coach this team. They're amazing. If you can't run with them, then you can't play with this team. They have players coming off the bench who can shoot the three, they have big girls who can come out and shoot the jumper.
"There are 15 players on the roster and the depth is what sets them apart. It's controlled mayhem. You see someone bounce a ball through an opponent's legs and then take off to the basket. It's almost like watching the Harlem Globetrotters.
"A lot of people don't like seeing records broken, but I'm thrilled. This is history."
UPDATE:
As of February 18, 2009 the Owls are now ranked 6th in the Nation.
