Marquis began as a Learning Community student in MAT011/UCC101 on the Elizabeth campus in the spring semester of 2008. His career goal is to be a graphic designer. Marquis continues to work hard toward reaching his goals in his second semester at UCC.

I was very excited when I was approached by the Center for Student Success and the Academic Learning Center about participating in the pilot program for Supplemental Instruction. Supplemental Instruction is a nationally recognized support program which offers regularly scheduled study sessions facilitated by an SI leader who attends class right along with the students.

This past spring I had the privilege of working with Dr. Rohrer's Biology 101 class as their Supplemental Instruction leader. I held several study sessions each week where the students and I would review lecture material. I also held four exam reviews during the semester. Study skills and test-taking strategies were stressed during the sessions.

Supplemental Instruction stresses "learning how to learn what to learn," but I believe a key component to its success is the personal connection the students make with the SI leader and their peers.

I was thrilled when, during the semester, the students in our "core group" made those personal connections. If one student in the group couldn't attend a session, others in the group would call, make sure the person was all right, and see that he or she got the work we covered that day. The students supported each other throughout the semester. In addition, I would talk with the group about what they thought their strengths and weaknesses were and I would plan each session to accommodate their needs.

I was very pleased with their success - it was a truly rewarding experience for me.

My name is Silvana Hidalgo and I was lucky enough to have attended Supplemental Instruction (SI) tutoring sessions while taking Bio 101 in spring 2008. The sessions helped me improve my study skills, learn how to solve critical thinking problems and also to better understand the content of the course. As a result, I've learned not only how to prepare myself better for a test but also how to work with my classmates to help each other get better results.

Chris Macchia is an excellent tutor who made it easier for the group to understand the material and provided tips to help us remember it. She is a very patient person who never gave up on us even though sometimes we felt like we couldn't keep up.

I truly recommend to students that they get involved in this program because it will do for you what it did for me: really help you understand the material and improve your knowledge. Without Chris's help I wouldn't have done as well as I did. I thank everyone involved for giving me the opportunity to be in the SI program.
