  • Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing;
  • Faculty and staff of NJ Teacher of the Deaf training programs and Interpreter Education Programs;
  • Persons interested in becoming educational interpreters;

Applications for those interested in participating in this voluntary program are available through the EIPDC office.  You can also go to our "Home" page and print a copy of the application.  Please mail or fax it to the EIPDC along with a letter of recommendation from your schools supervisor.  The EIPDC will then coordinate and schedule assessment(s) based on the candidates experience with educational interpreting.

TRACKING OF ASSESSMENT PROCESS/MONITORING OF PROGRESS

Recruitment:  Promote the awareness and participation of interpreters in the services offered by the EIPDC.

Assessment: Coordinate the assessment of interpreting performance skills in Sign Language (**Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment, EIPA), Cued Speech (The National Cued Speech Association) and Oral Transliteration (Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf, RID). All assessments will be sent to their appropriate centers for diagnostic testing.  The results will be sent directly to the EIPDC and the candidate.

Advisement and Performance Skill Improvement Plan Development Advisement will now include: Professional Skills Development Plan Workshops to help interpret the EIPA diagnostic report.  Develop a professional Skills Development Plan.  Review of Transcripts to determine whether the educational interpreter should pursue the academic or performance route to certification.  Reviewing transcripts to determine eligibility for certification and planning the academic coursework required for certification.

Portfolio: The EIPDC will be developing a portfolio for each Educational Interpreter who completes the program.  Their portfolio will include the interpreters resume or Curriculum Vitae, high school and college transcripts, transcripts of CEUs earned, certificates of in-services and workshops attended thru the EIPDC, documentation of National and/or State certification, employment and job description as an educational interpreter.

Professional Development:  Continue to implement a variety of professional development activities according to the rating scales and the categories of performance skills evaluated by each of the three assessment instruments for Sign Language, Cued Speech and oral Transliteration.  In addition, implement the academic program of 15 credit hours of professional education coursework to meet the academic requirements for certification as specified in N.J.A.C. 6A:9-13.18.

Additional Assessments:  Coordinate the 2nd EIPA for those educational interpreters who did not meet the required score of 3.0.

**The Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), developed by D. Brenda Schick and Kevin Williams in 1993, is a tool specifically designed to evaluate the performance of educational interpreters in the unique skills necessary for interpreting for children in public school settings and will be used for both pre-assessment and post-assessment of the participants using sign language.
