Meet Emilie Vocaj Wan

International Studies
Cranford, NJ (from Grand Baie, Mauritius; rhymes with delicious)
Age: 20

Are you a member of any club or student group?:  Member of Union County College's Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa, and Vice-President of the Art Society.

Favorite Class at Union: Too many to choose from! English, Government, History, French, International Politics and Painting.

Why did you choose Union?: Having just moved to the States from my home, a small island named Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, it seemed like the most logical decision. I arrived in the States on September 1, 2011 and took the placement test on the second. My Aunt is in the nursing program and other family members have started here too. So I’m not the first Mauritian to walk the premises.

What is your fondest memory so far at Union?: Oooohhh that's a tough one, but I would have to admit it is a split between two. The feeling of excitement I get when I walk into a new class at the beginning of each semester is one. This ties in with the incredible experience of meeting new individuals from all over the world, from different walks of life and to develop a bond with them. Every day at Union has offered a new experience for me.

Interesting facts about yourself: I am bilingual, I speak both English and French. I grew up on an island that maybe 3% of the student body at Union has heard of. I grew up with a British education back home and I can pull off a wicked Londoner accent.

What is the biggest adjustment you had to make coming to college?: Having come from an island with a population of 1.3 million, my biggest adjustment was America and her alien ways. I couldn't get over the difference in temperature for the dear life of me. Trying to understand the average American college student in their natural habitat and being completely baffled, huge culture shock! My behavior stands out here. I come from a British educational system and I wore a uniform. We are taught to respect our teachers. I couldn’t understand how students could talk to their professors with disrespect or fall asleep in class. This was completely alien and foreign to me.

Career or further education Goals: I plan on transferring to a four-year institution to pursue Political Science and minor in French Studies.

Is there anything else we ought to know about you?: I am a travel obsessed foodie who wears her heart on her sleeve. I am also an Indie music junkie and the most clumsy person my mother knows. I burst spontaneously into song and dance, why? Simple. Why not?

The most rewarding experience so far was my trip to Tanzania in 2011. The trip humbled me, and set the focus for the person I one day wish to become. I adore general knowledge games, such as the British show QI, as well as loving, smart and witty humor, and doodling,

I have never consumed a Twinkie and have no plans too. My birthday is the third of April and I love sunflowers. I would really like sunflowers for my birthday.
