Zhenia Bemko is a liberal studies major who transferred to Union County College after taking a chemistry course with Prof. Heidary in summer 2010. She had been at Alfred University for three years and her experience at Union County College that summer was all she needed to make the change. She is interested in law and credits the liberal studies degree with allowing her to take many courses in government, political science, and the paralegal studies program. She sees herself majoring in international studies when she transfers from Union County College to a four-year institution.
As you get to know Bemko, it is easy to understand why she is interested in international studies. She traveled extensively as a child, having spent time in Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, Ukraine, Ireland, Trinidad, England, and Mexico. Her personal background is just as diverse as her travels. Bemko’s ethnicity is Native American, African American, and French. However, she was adopted so her father is Ukrainian and her mother was Jewish. Her stepmom is from Trinidad and is Hindu. To say the least, her holiday celebrations are many.
Bemko is very active in student life at Union. She is the Vice President of Fundraising for the Business Association and is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa, the honors society for two-year colleges. In her “free” time, she works part-time at Bath and Body Works.
In anticipation of her May 2012 graduation, she is currently applying to American University in Washington, DC; The American University in Paris; Columbia University; and Rutgers. From all her previous travels she sees herself serving in international law or as a diplomat.
