Meet Summer Rae McLaughlan

Berkeley Heights, NJ

Age: 18

Are you a member of any club or student group?:  Member of Psi Beta, the Student Ambassador Program and I’m a Committee Leader of Service for Phi Theta Kappa.

Favorite class at Union: Sociology 101 with Professor Smith.

Why did you choose Union?: I originally planned on going to a four year university. Unfortunately, I did not receive enough financial aid so Union County College was the best financial choice. Especially since being a scholar in the STARS program helped me get here as well. Thanks to my advisor, Ektor Quiles, many opportunities have opened up for me. Union County College was not only a good financial choice, but also a solid stepping-stone in my education.

What is your fondest memory so far at Union?: Officially becoming a part of the Phi Theta Kappa family at my induction ceremony. They’re all really awesome, intelligent people with high aspirations and it’s great working and interacting with them.

Interesting fact about yourself: I used to be an Irish Step Dancer.

Special question – Why did you want to go to the NEW Leadership™ New Jersey event at Douglass?: – I never knew much about politics and was sometimes intimidated so I wanted to learn more. I also wanted to hone my leadership skills for future success. The NEW Leadership™ conference exceeded my expectations and was a wonderful and enlightening experience. From this experience, I realized that it’s not that hard for people my age to get involved in politics. I might become involved in local politics when I get older and settled into my clinical psychology career.

What is the biggest adjustment you had to make coming to college?:  I didn’t feel like I had to make much of an adjustment coming to college. I’m still living at home and my high school prepared me pretty well for college. I developed the independent skills necessary for college. College seems intimidating at first, but becoming involved and gaining support from my peers makes for an easy transition.

Career or further education goals: Clinical Psychologist. I hope to transfer to Rutgers in the Spring and graduate from their 5-year doctorate program.

Is there anything else we ought to know about you?: I sing, play the guitar and write songs.
