Meet Joe Henry

Linden, NJ

Age: 30-ish

Are you a member of any club or student group?: VP of Communication for Phi Theta Kappa, Union County College Veterans Club

Favorite Class at Union: Physics 111 Lab. Mostly you do things on paper, but in the lab you have a visual. You can actually see what’s happening. Hands-on is always more interesting and fun.

Why did you choose Union?:  I was looking to go to NJIT and when I talked to the admissions department they said due to the time lapse in my education that I would need to go to Community College first. By completing my Associates Degree here first, I’ll be able to transfer everything I’ve done to NJIT when I get there.

What is your fondest memory so far at Union?: Interaction with other like-minded individuals. Discussing engineering related topics apart from our curriculum.

Interesting fact about yourself: I custom built my own Harley Davidson Sportster, 1953 Pontiac Chieftan and 1977 Pontiac Firebird.

I’ve driven a little over 500,000 miles on three continents (North America, Europe and Asia). I’ve driven everything from a motorcycle to a 29,000 pound (“7 Ton”) Marine Corp MTVR and I can order a beer and curse someone out in seven languages. Yup, it’s true.

What is the biggest adjustment you had to make coming to college?: Going from a very regimented lifestyle in the military and then dealing with the student lifestyle which kind of floats without consequences.

Career or further education goals: At minimum, a BA in Mechanical Engineering at NJIT. Ideally open up my own business, building  “traditional” 1950s style custom cars, hotrods and motorcycles.

Is there anything else we ought to know about you?: This past April I rode a bull. A real live bull.

Why?: Because sometimes you just gotta take the bull by the horns… or the rope tied around it, as the case may be.
