Union County College Students Excel in LINCS Supply Chain Management Certification Program

Union County College is one of the first Leveraging, Integrating, Networking, and Coordinating Supplies (LINCS) consortium members to have students earn all eight of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) SCPro™ Fundamentals certifications in the national LINCS Supply Chain Management Program. Two Union County College LINCS Program students, Theodore Freedman of Elizabeth and US Army Veteran Jose Brito of Plainfield, received a specialized certificate for their accomplishments from the official LINCS industry partner, CSCMP.

“We congratulate these outstanding students who’ve become certified in all eight certification tracks of CSCMP’s SCPro™ Fundamentals,” said Rick Blasgen, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). “Earning these certifications demonstrates that they’ve gained the supply chain knowledge and 21st century skills they will need to advance their careers and remain competitive in today’s marketplace. This accomplishment paves the way for these students to achieve success in their supply chain careers.”

The LINCS program began in June 2015 and since then 57 students have earned 119 CSCMP certifications. LINCS Program students include unemployed workers, veterans, students seeking an in-demand degree, and professionals looking for a career change. Union County College is one of only two colleges in New Jersey to offer the CSCMP certifications. Currently, at Union County College there are 172 students enrolled in the LINCS Supply Chain Management Certification Program. Students typically spend 40 hours in the classroom and study on their own time to prepare for the CSCMP examinations.

“At Union County College, we are providing training in essential areas of supply chain management that will prepare our students for entry-level and mid-level positions in the field. Our program will enable participants to be more competitive in gaining employment. We are targeting unemployed and displaced workers, the underemployed and veterans. The large number of students who have enrolled in our program demonstrates their interest in entering or advancing in this field. We commend all of the students who have received CSCMP certifications with special recognition to those students who have received all eight certifications” said Dr. Barbara Gaba, Union County College Provost, Elizabeth Campus & Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The LINCS program offers courses in various formats including traditional, online and hybrid instruction and encompasses eight industry-recognized certification tracks: customer service operations, demand planning, inventory management, manufacturing and service operations, supply chain management principles, supply management and procurement, transportation operations, and warehousing operations.

Freedman said the program exceeded his expectations because it was a challenge. He feels that this will make him perform better in the workplace. “I’m grateful for Union County College, the College offers great tools and resources in terms of personnel and the course materials. I’ll be taking more courses in the future.” Brito stated that, “…the program was very helpful. This program is a stepping stone but a very crucial one. Supply chain management is a very big field and in high demand.”

The goal of the LINCS consortium is to provide education and certification opportunities for potential job applicants, including displaced workers, long-term unemployed workers, and veterans entering the workforce. Additionally, the program will serve workers who are presently employed, but require additional training to improve positions, increase wages and broaden career options; high school graduates who are currently enrolled in colleges or technical schools; and high school seniors who are undecided about what jobs or careers to pursue after high school graduation.

Register Now for Continuing Education Classes Offered in Spring 2016


The Office of Continuing Education at Union County College has posted the spring 2016 brochure online. Classes are offered for adults as well as youths ages 11-17. Most programs run from the end of January through May and online registration is now available for all courses. The Continuing Education Department offers non-credit classes for professional development, career enhancement, leisure and personal enrichment, English as a Second Language (ESL), and courses in Spanish.

New professional development classes for spring include Business Strategy for the Entrepreneur, Innovation for the Entrepreneur: Idea to Marketplace, Surviving the Job Search in the 21st Century, Cyber Safe and Introduction to Cybersecurity, and Microsoft Excel 2013: Data Analysis with Pivot Tables.  Union County College is a Regional Cisco Networking Academy offering the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) programs.  We are also a CompTIA Authorized Academy providing training in A+ Hardware and CompTIA Network+ Certification programs.

Enrichment classes new for spring include How to Build a Website, Ballroom Gumba Core and More, Introduction to Drones, Stress Management, History of U.S. Presidential Elections, History of American Popular Music, and Writing for Television.   Our Youth Programs will be introducing new courses such as Juggling Workshop, PARCC Boot Camp, Writing for Self-Discovery, Creative Writing and Drawing for Beginners and Digital Skills and Ethics.

Union County College Names Two New Governors to the Board


One is a retired professor with roots to the 1982 merger that created Union County College. The other is a successful attorney for the healthcare industry.

Dr. Sandra Fishinger and Mr. Anthony Manger, Esq., were appointed to Union’s prestigious Board of Governors during its Dec. 1, 2015, meeting. Both have been active participants on the College’s Foundation Board, which raises nearly $1 million annually to provide scholarships for students who need a financial boost for tuition. And both have created scholarships as a permanent legacy to their commitment to Union’s students.
 
Sondra Fishinger of Rahway retired from Union in July 2007 at the rank of Senior Professor of English completing a 38 year teaching career. Dr. Fishinger’s career began in the Union County Technical Institute, which merged with Union College, a junior college, in 1982 to become the comprehensive community college it is today. Dr. Fishinger taught courses in contemporary, world, and American literature; public speaking; poetry; and composition/introduction to literature. She also developed several online courses and maintained an informational website for students.

From 1992 to 1999, Dr. Fishinger served as the Transfer Articulation Director and was responsible for effectuating agreements with four-year colleges and universities that would allow the direct transfer of associate degrees without the loss of credits. She served as the Chairperson of the Faculty from 1996-2000, and as a member of the Educational Opportunity Fund Advisory and Community boards for more than 35 years.
 
Dr. Fishinger also has extensive experience in community service, currently serving as one of five commissioners on the Rahway Parking Authority Board. She served on the Board of Directors of Literacy Volunteers of Union County from 2009-2012, and served as vice president of the board for one year. In 2008 she was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway and in 2012 and 2014 was President of their Board of Trustees. Finally, in May 2012, Dr. Fishinger was the first retired faculty member to serve on the Board of Trustees of the Union County College Foundation. She has two scholarships in her name—one for students in the American Honors program and the other for students in the Educational Opportunity Fund.

Tony Manger has spent more than 25 years of his law career focusing his practice on the healthcare industry and nonprofit institutions in New Jersey, as well as in New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Prior to forming his own firm, he was the head of the Health Care Group at Norris, McLaughlin & Marcus, P.A.

Mr. Manger has handled some of the largest mergers and acquisitions in the health care industry in New Jersey. He organized the state’s largest malpractice insurer and has served as legal counsel to a national association of professional liability insurers. He has vast experience in health care regulatory, corporate and contract matters, tax exemption, patient care, and other health care issues.

His law degree is from Columbia Law School and he has bar admissions in New Jersey and the U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey. Mr. Manger has professional affiliations with the American Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, American Health Lawyers Association, and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Mr. Manger has also served on many nonprofit boards, including the Montgomery Academy, which he chaired for more than 10 years, the New Ballet Company as Vice President and Treasurer, The Commission on Accreditation for Home Care as President, and Faith in Housing as President. He is the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Union County College Foundation and is a member of the Board of Advisors for Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Center of Excellence in Leadership, Governance, and Philanthropy.

Last year, the John A. and Ruth Davis Manger Scholarship became endowed at the “Centurion” ($100,000 level) and generates $5,000 annually, in perpetuity, for student scholarships.

Union County College Names New Head of Plainfield Campus


Union County College has appointed Dr. Regina Riccioni as Dean for the Plainfield Campus. In this role, Dr. Riccioni will oversee all operations for the College’s fastest-growing Campus, which recently opened a new building to showcase health-sciences programs.

Dr. Riccioni joins Union after having served for more than two years as the director of Corporate Education and Training at Edison NJ-based Middlesex Community College, where she was responsible for providing customized training for regional businesses. At Middlesex, she performed a number of duties similar to those of a dean, including community outreach, enrollment analysis, marketing, budget management, classroom scheduling, and grant acquisition.

Dr. Riccioni says, “What excited me about the dean position at Union is the opportunity to have my finger on the pulse of every aspect of Campus life in Plainfield. I’ll be supporting student success, I’ll oversee the robust noncredit services, I’ll strive to grow the credit programing, I’ll be a problem-solver for faculty and staff, and I’ll be reaching out to the Plainfield community to strengthen the ties between the College and residents.”

One of her prior positions was as the assistant dean for the Douglass Project at Rutgers University, where she was responsible for managing a program dedicated to advancing the opportunities for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Dr. Riccioni also has a background in healthcare, with a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Medicine and Dentistry. As a certified health-education specialist, Dr. Riccioni understands and appreciates the needs of faculty and students on a campus that features Practical Nursing, Paramedic Services, Physical Therapy, and Emergency Medical Services. The Plainfield Campus is also the home of the Muhlenberg/JFK Medical Center partnerships in nursing studies.

She will be joining a campus that opened its new Health Sciences building during the Fall and welcomed the return of its nationally recognized program in American Sign Language/Deaf Studies.

Along with the master’s degree from UMDNJ, Dr. Riccioni has a doctorate in Education and a bachelor of science from Rutgers.

The College has been operating a Plainfield Campus since 1970, having moved to its current location in 1994. The Plainfield Campus occupies a city block between East Second and East Third Streets and Church Street and across Roosevelt Avenue. Almost 15 percent of the College’s total student body takes classes at the Campus.


Union County College Welcomes Raul Sanchez


Union County College President Dr. Margaret McMenamin welcomes the College’s new Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Officer Raul Sanchez, who began at Union last month. Dr. Sanchez has a law degree from Harvard, a master’s in Latin American Studies from Stanford, and a bachelor’s degree from Princeton, where he graduated cum laude. His higher education experience has been at Washington State University, the University of Idaho, and SUNY Stony Brook. He has also served as an attorney for New York City-based law firms and as a program officer for the Ford Foundation’s Mexico and Central America office in Mexico City.

As the EEO/Affirmative Action Officer, Dr. Sanchez will be responsible for ensuring that the College is in compliance with federal and State laws and for spearheading Union’s initiatives to build and maintain a more diverse workforce.
 
 

Union County College Faculty receive recognition as Distinguished Educators


Two Union County College professors named Elizabeth (Elizabeth Joyce and Elizabeth Hawthorne) are receiving national recognition in their respective fields of Law and Cybersecurity. In law, Union County College's Paralegal Coordinator and Senior Professor Elizabeth Joyce was elected as the American Association for Paralegal Education's representative to the American Bar Association's Approval Commission. In this role, Joyce will serve on the commission that reviews and approves Paralegal education programs throughout the United States. The term of the appointment will begin in August of 2016 for one year intervals, up to a maximum of three years.

In Cybersecurity, Elizabeth Hawthorne earned national recognition for her expertise as an educator in this field. The Association for Computing Machinery named her a Distinguished Educator for 2015. The ACM is the nation's leading association of computing professionals. Hawthorne earned the award for her innovative education in Cybersecurity.

The criteria for selection to the Distinguished Member grade include at least 15 years of professional experience, five years of continuous ACM membership, and significant accomplishments or impact within the computing field. The award recognizes Hawthorne and her affiliation as a senior professor of Computer Science at Union.

 

 

Meet Ryan Nalis: A College Degree in Less Than a Year


When Ryan Nealis puts his mind to something, you’ll go broke betting against him. Ryan first came to Union County College in the summer of 2014. He was 33 years old, a father of three, and a bar manager from Elizabeth. Ryan figured that a college degree could launch him into the career he’d always envisioned for himself—“I’ve always wanted to do something to help people.”

Ryan was facing a brick wall, though. Besides the challenge of juggling college with his life responsibilities, Ryan had dropped out of school in 10th grade and would be venturing into a classroom for the first time in 16 years.

Although he would pass his high-school equivalency on the first attempt, Ryan encountered all sorts of obstacles that forced him to defer his dream of a college education for several years.

When he finally enrolled in Union during 2014, he came with a sense of urgency. “I’m not a kid. I have real-world experience. I went from living in a park to working for $90,000-plus a year at a bank. I wasn't happy, I was miserable actually. Without a college degree, I was unable to switch fields, unable to search for employment that would allow me to spend time with my three children and work in a field where my children are able to look up to me. I wanted to complete the associate degree in less than a year and then go right into a bachelor’s program.”

Some people scoffed and told him, “No way, Ryan.” But he registered for three classes in Union’s second summer session and four more in the Fall of 2014. Through the College’s Assessment Center, he was also able to take tests to earn 12 credits in the NJ State’s College Level Examination Program. As Coordinator of Student Success Tinny Cheung says, “When a student comes to us with a plan like Ryan’s—to complete his degree in a year—then it’s our job to do everything we can to help him succeed in achieving his goal.”

With Summer-term and Fall-semester success under his belt, Ryan was ready to make a big move in the Spring of 2015. The College approved his request to take a whopping 22 credits (seven classes) during the 15-week semester.

All of the classes were in a classroom—not online. “I actually bumped up my (grade point average) that semester,” Ryan recalls. “Of course, what complicated things was having to schlep to classes while being on crutches for three months with a ruptured Achilles tendon, and carrying around a 60-pound bag of books.”

Ryan completed his associate degree by taking three “killer” courses during the first Summer term of 2015 (Statistics, Government, and Anatomy & Physiology). He earned 66 credits and an associate degree in Criminal Justice. His final grade-point average was a stellar 3.5, which would qualify him for entry in the national honor society.

Ryan plans to attend Commencement and receive his degree from President McMenamin during the Winter ceremony, which will take place on Jan. 14 at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway. A week after that, Ryan expects to begin taking classes for his bachelor’s degree Kean University. “I’d like to finish in no more than three semesters,” he says.

Ryan’s future plans may include service for Homeland Security, the Fire Department, Law Enforcement or Corrections. “I want to be in a career where I can make a difference in people’s lives,” he says.

And what does he have to say to the people who told him there was no way he could ever complete a college degree in less than one year?

“They were really wrong about me. Not only that, they don’t know Union County College. It’s a college that’s really all about the students. Professors like Dr. Denise Lagos (English), Dr. Alison Brown (US History), Professor Joseph Margiotta (US Government), as well as many others, not only went out of their way to accommodate me through multiple obstacles, they left a lasting impression on my life as they are individuals that actually care and want to ensure your success.”

New Student Representative Appointed to Union County College’s Board of Trustees


At the Nov. 2, 2015, Union County College Board of Trustees Reorganization Meeting, Nuno Pereira was nominated to serve as the Student Representative to the Board. He will serve as a nonvoting member of the Board of Trustees for a term of one year. Mr. Pereira is a May 2015 graduate of the College and is from Hillside.
 
Mr. Pereira is currently studying criminal justice at John Jay College of the City University of New York. He was able to transfer to John Jay College, not just because he had all the academic criteria necessary for acceptance, but thanks to being one of only 90 recipients of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. The Scholarship will award Mr. Pereira up to $40,000 per year to complete his bachelor’s degree.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students in the country. The JKC Foundation is a legacy of the billionaire philanthropist and former owner of the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Lakers.

A review panel of distinguished university faculty and admissions professionals judged the applicants based on a number of criteria, including academics, financial need, persistence, demonstrated leadership, and the desire to help others. In his time at Union, Mr. Pereira served as president of the Student Government Association at Union and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Resume and Interview Classes at Union County College


RAHWAY – To accommodate a rising number of students from the Rahway area, Union County College will bring workshops in resume writing and employment interview techniques to participants at the centrally located Rahway site.  This location was specifically selected to afford students the opportunity to attend classes without having to travel to a College campus.  The two workshops, “Make Your Resume Work for You” and “Developing Confidence for the Job Interview” will be held on Thursday, December 3 during back-to-back afternoon sessions.

While an individual may have the qualifications for a selected position, it is imperative that the applicant distinguish himself/herself from other, similarly qualified candidates. The classes are presented in a participatory manner with ample opportunity to address individual concerns.

“Make Your Resume Work for You” will cover the rationale behind effective resume writing, getting into the dos and don’ts of the entire process. Various resume styles will be discussed as students review in-class sample resumes while having an assortment of other samples as take-home reference guides. Participants will gain insight into preparing electronic resumes to be scanned into human resource databases, and also learn how to prepare a convincing cover letter to accompany the resume. The course will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
 
“Developing Confidence for the Job Interview” will provide attendees with solid information on how to prepare for an employment interview, thus gaining confidence in their ability to “ace” the interview and land a position. Participants will be presented with various types of trick questions that are often asked at interviews, questions that the applicant also should ask, negotiating for the salary, multiple interviews, internal interviews, body language, and closing the interview to their advantage. As time permits, participants will have the opportunity to practice and refine their responses to questions through mock interviews. The course will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Heads Up Campaign


As part of C4 week, Phi Theta Kappa hosted a panel discussion to support the “Heads Up American Campaign—a national initiative to provide free community college education for anyone who is willing to work for it. On Sept. 9, President Obama announced this proposal and has been traveling the country to highlight the need for affordable, quality career and education choices for students and to discuss some of the many ways the Administration is working to provide all Americans with the skills and knowledge they need to acquire good-paying jobs and grow the economy. On Oct. 20, PTK had a Heads Up Banner in the Richel Student Commons in Cranford and students placed their hand prints on the banner in their support of the initiative and the hands-on apprenticeship training that could become available with the initiative.

Bachelor’s Degrees at Union County College


New Jersey’s first community college just took a big step toward becoming NJ State’s first community college to offer bachelor’s degrees.

On Oct. 20, Union County College sent a program announcement to the State’s 53 college and university presidents as notification of Union County College’s intent to provide a baccalaureate of science degree in nursing for students who have completed an associate degree or diploma in the nursing program and have passed the examination to be registered nurses.

Union County College President Margaret McMenamin considers this new program to be in line with the College’s mission of “accessibility, affordability, and excellence.” She says, “This RN to BSN Completion Program will provide greater opportunity for registered nurses within the community to pursue advanced nursing education at a lower cost.”

Union’s Chief Academic Officer Maris Lown says that Union County College is well-positioned to provide bachelor’s degrees for nurses. “Union has a 40-year history of educating nursing students at the practical nursing and associate-degree levels,” she says. “Moreover, we have substantive resources and a doctorally prepared faculty in nursing.”

To be eligible for the RN-to-BSN Completion Program at Union, students would need to hold an associate degree in nursing, an associate degree in science, or a diploma in nursing. They would also need to hold a current license as a registered nurse.

The College is confident that the 120-credit program will pass muster with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Dr. Lown says, “The curriculum is organized around the concepts of quality patient care, population-based health, leadership skills within a variety of organizational structures, clinical decision making, and evidence-based practices, concepts that will prepare the graduates to offer expert nursing care for the community, the State, and the nation.”

Union proposes to admit a first class of 20 to 30 students for the start of the spring 2017 semester. Enrollment would expand to 100 students after four years.

The College has requested that the presidents forward their comments about the program within 30 days. “Because the program announcement acknowledges that this is a petition to exceed the College’s programmatic mission, the reviewers are asked to comment on excessive cost or program redundancy,” says Dr. Lown. “Given that these are the only criteria that are germane to determining Union’s eligibility to provide this program, we can demonstrate unequivocally that the program is appropriate to our mission, is affordable for students, and addresses a critical community need for nurses with bachelor’s degrees.”

After vetting the program with the presidents, Union will forward the proposal to the NJ Presidents’ Council and the NJ Commission on Higher Education. The entire approval process is typically completed within six to 12 months.

Union County College Celebrates the New Location of Health Sciences Programs at Plainfield Campus

Tuesday, Oct. 20, was a momentous day for Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin, as she held a ribbon cutting event at the new location of the Health Sciences programs at the College’s Plainfield campus. Joined by Assemblyman Jerry Green and Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp, all three agreed that the day marked a new beginning for the educational opportunities available in the City of Plainfield. President McMenamin was also joined by Freeholder Vernell Wright and many members of the College’s board, including Board of Trustees Chairman, Victor M. Richel, who addressed the audience. Mr. Richel reflected on the opening of the Plainfield campus, more than 20 years ago, and how this addition and upgrade will help fulfill the demands in healthcare training today.

Also present were members of the Thul family. Mrs. Louise Thul, was joined by sons, Larry and James Thul, to participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration of the new use of the building that formerly served as Thul Auto Parts. The property was originally acquired by the College in November 2013 from the Thul family. James Thul spoke on behalf of the family and expressed how pleased he was to see the building in use again and serving those in the community, just as his family did for more than 100 years. The College’s Practical Nursing, Emergency Health Sciences, and Paramedic programs are in this building located at 225 Roosevelt Avenue.
 
 

Community Colleges in Union and Bergen Receive a $2.6 Million “First In The World” Grant

For decades, the USA was number one in the world in the percentage of 25-34 year-olds with college degrees. Today we rank 14th in the world, as only 42 percent of that age group has an associate or bachelor’s degree.

The US Department of Education has challenged the nation’s 1,200 community colleges to help the American educational system restore its “first in the world” status. Over the past two years, the DOE has invested $26 million in funding for this “First In The World” grant program.

During the week of Sept. 21, the DOE announced the winning grant proposals. Union County College, with partner and lead Bergen Community College, are one of only 17 winners nation-wide and will split a $2.6 million award over four years.

The idea Union and Bergen will pursue to help improve graduation success for students involves basic-skills math. For the joint project, Union and Bergen will include a combined 8,400 students from both community colleges.

The cohort will be randomly divided into three groups. The first group receives instruction through a ‘Boot Camp’ as a short-term, pre-semester bridge program and then moves immediately into College-level math.

The second group is enrolled directly into credit-bearing college math—regardless of how these students fare on their Accuplacer test—but are also afforded the services of a tutor for at least one hour per week.

For the third group, students will receive the traditional developmental-math courses which are predominantly in a lecture format at both Union and Bergen.

The goals of this program are to: 1) increase the 3-semester retention rates of first time students placing into remedial math, and 2) decrease time to completion of first-time full-time students placing into developmental math.

In other words, it’s making America number one again.

Burke to speak at Union County College Alumni Association Author Series


The Union County College Alumni Association will be hosting an Author Series Event on Sunday, October 4, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the Roy Smith Theater at the Cranford Campus. Guest Speaker will be author Nancy Burke, and she will discuss her most recently published book, If I Could Paint the Moon Black. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. 


If I Could Paint the Moon Black is the true story of an Estonian childhood interrupted first by Russian, and then German occupation, during World War II. The book brings us back to World War II Europe and reminds us of the power of tenacity and courage in the face of hardship. The trials and tribulations experienced by the main character are still relevant to all today, no matter if you have lived here for generations or have just recently arrived on the “land of the free.”

Author Nancy Burke holds an MFA in creative writing from Rutgers University and a BA in anthropology from Montclair State University. She works full-time in marketing and business development for the Industry-Business Institute at Union County College.


Following the presentation, there will be a chance to chat with the author, light refreshments, and for those interested, the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of the book.

Union County College sets an all-time record for number of graduates

 
Union County College's Class of 2015 is the most successful graduating class in the College's 82-year history. The total number of graduates this year hit 1,505. That's 200 more than the prior year's record.

Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin announced the milestone achievement during the College's annual Convocation on Tuesday, Sept. 1. She said, "That's another 1,505 college-educated people to enrich our community. That's not just good for our workforce, it's good for America. As Thomas Jefferson once said, 'An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.'"

This year's graduation total is nearly three times higher than it was five years ago. In addition, the three-year graduation rate for full-time students surpassed 15 percent—which is 5 percent higher than last year and the highest percentage in more than 20 years.

During the Convocation, President McMenamin said to an audience of more than 300 faculty and staff: "There's no secret sauce here, nothing revolutionary. In our classrooms, in our laboratories, in our tutoring centers, and in our advisement offices, you are building a climate and culture that promotes movement toward graduation and the finish line."

The president gave credit to faculty and staff for their commitment to student success. She offered even more accolades to the students themselves, saying "their record of achievement is proof that a little tender-loving-care can go a long way. Given the right amount of support, our students have proven that they can and will succeed."
 

Union County College Foundation Welcomes Five New Board Members

CRANFORD – The Union County College Foundation recently welcomed five new community leaders to serve on their Board of Trustees. Union County College Foundation Executive Director Doug Rouse is pleased with the appointments, believing that…” we have five citizen leaders who will bring fresh perspectives to the Trustees in their service to the Foundation and Union County College.”

Alan Haveson, of Berkeley Heights, is currently retired, but spent many years as the owner and operator of Eastern Bearing, the largest independent bearing and power transmission products distributor in the New Jersey/New York/Eastern Pennsylvania metropolitan area and of Lee Controls, a manufacturer of precision linear shafting and related precision linear motion bearing, and component products in Piscataway, New Jersey. Mr. Haveson also participates in many civic roles such as Trustee at Temple Emanu-el in Westfield, NJ; President of the Power Transmission Distributors Association; Member of the Planning Board in Watchung, NJ; Board Member of Stonegate Townhome Association in Watchung, NJ; Vice-President and Treasurer of the Monterey Towers Homeowners Association in Watchung, NJ; Member of Central Jersey SCORE; and serves as current President of the New Jersey Technology & Manufacturing Association. Mr. Haveson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Seton Hall University.

Patrick Scanlon, of Union, is Vice President Commercial Banking and Director of Government Relations of ConnectOne Bank. He is a former mayor and township committeeman for the township of Union; is a three time winner of the Union Center National Bank Presidential Award for Excellence; and was the founder/director of Genesis Drug and Alcohol Recovery Program at the former Union Hospital. Mr. Scanlon has also served as the President of the Union Township Board of Health; as Vice Chair of the Union Public Library Board of Governors; as Vice Chair of the Township of Union Special Improvement Business District; and was the founder of the Irish American Society of Union. Many local residents may know Mr. Scanlon from his involvement with the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. He has served as their Treasurer since its inception.

Michael Duffy, of Pompton Plains, is currently employed as the Senior Director, North American Operation for Celgene. In his capacity, he manages a staff of over 200 employees in engineering, life sciences, and consumer related industries. He is also an accredited Master Coach and is certified to provide leadership to executive level personnel within the organization. Mr. Duffy has participated in several Habitat for Humanity builds, including in other states, and was President of the high school parents Soccer Association, a non-profit, self-funded association that provided scholarships to graduating seniors. Mr. Duffy holds an Associate in Applied Science degree in electronics from Union County College; he holds a bachelor of science degree in Industrial Technology from Montclair State University; and he has a master’s in business administration in management from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Deborah Enix-Ross, of Summit, is the Senior Advisor, International Dispute Resolution Group of Debevoise & Plimpton, LLP of New York, NY. As the senior advisor, she is responsible for managing lawyers in international dispute resolution, intellectual property and privacy/data protection. She previously served as the Senior Legal Officer, Head, Information and External Relations Section, for World Intellectual Property Organization – Arbitration and Mediation Center in Geneva, Switzerland. In this role she advised lawyers, companies and business associations on the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution to resolve intellectual property disputes, especially trademarks, patents, licensing, franchising, and copyrights. Ms. Enix-Ross has a bachelor of arts degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Miami; a certificate in international law from the London School of Economics; a Juris Doctorate from the University of Miami School of Law in Coral Gables, FL; and a diploma in comparative law from Columbia University – Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law, New York, NY. She also serves as the Chair of the American Bar Association’s Center for Human Rights and as an officer for the Bar Issues Commission of the International Bar Association. She is a member of the New York Bar and the United States District Court.
Sandra D. Rice, of Summit, is Senior Vice President, Eastern Region and National Recruitment for the Emma L. Bowen Foundation.  Her primary responsibilities include organizational development and planning.  As SVP, she recruits minority high school and college students to work in multi-summer paid internships at media companies (including NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, ESPN, HBO and Warner Bros) throughout the United States. Prior to joining the Emma L. Bowen Foundation, Ms. Rice was the Marketing Manager for ABC Daytime and was responsible for the marketing and promotion of programs including All My Children, General Hospital and One Life to Live. Ms. Rice personally served two consecutive terms as National President of the Alliance for Women in Media (formerly the American Women in Radio & Television) located in Washington, DC.  She is also a former co-chair for the Annual Gracie Allen Awards held in Los Angeles, California. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Center for Great Expectations in Somerville, New Jersey;  the Advisory Board for Embrace Kids Foundation in New Brunswick, New Jersey and as Vice President for the Friends of Plainfield Public Library in Plainfield, New Jersey. Ms. Rice has a bachelor degree in journalism, radio and television from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in media studies from The New School in New York, NY. She was also selected amongst outstanding business leaders to attend the executive program at Simmons Graduate School of Management in Boston, Massachusetts and later served on their Alumni Board.

Resume Writing and Interview Skills Classes Offered in Rahway


RAHWAY – In preparation for the post-Labor Day hiring season, residents of Rahway and vicinity can gain insight into employment search techniques including resume writing and interview techniques right in their local area.  Union County College will present “Make Your Resume Work for You” and “Developing Confidence for the Job Interview” on Thursday, August 6 to specifically target the Rahway enrollment market by providing instruction during afternoon sessions at the Union County Arts Center in midtown Rahway.
 
The workshops are geared toward the unemployed, those who are seeking enhancement to their existing careers, persons who seek a promotion or lateral move within their existing companies, as well as individuals who have been out of the workforce for a time and wish to re-enter the marketplace.  Additionally, the courses are appropriate for new graduates.
 
While you may have the qualifications for a position for which you are applying, it is imperative that you distinguish yourself from other, similarly qualified candidates. The classes are presented in a participatory manner with ample opportunity to address individual concerns.
 
“Make Your Resume Work for You” will cover the rationale behind effective resume writing, getting into the dos and don’ts of the entire process.  Various resume styles will be discussed as students review in-class sample resumes while having an assortment of other samples as take-home reference guides. Participants will gain insight into preparing electronic resumes to be scanned into corporate databases, and also learn how to prepare a convincing cover letter to accompany the resume.  This course will be presented from 1 to 3 p.m.
 
“Developing Confidence for the Job Interview” will provide attendees with solid information on how to prepare for an employment interview, thus gaining confidence in their ability to “ace” the interview and land a position.  Participants will be presented with various types of trick questions that are often asked at interviews, questions that the applicant also should ask, negotiating for the salary, multiple interviews, internal interviews, body language, and closing the interview to their advantage.  As time permits, participants will have the opportunity to practice and refine their responses to questions through mock interviews.  This course will be presented from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Sens. Booker, Baldwin and Rep. Scott Introduce America’s College Promise Act to Make Higher Education More Accessible and Affordable

 
Bill makes two years of community college free, provides affordable pathway for low-income students to a four-year college degree
 
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) joined U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, and Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA), the House Education and Workforce Committee Ranking Member, to introduce the America’s College Promise Act of 2015.
 
The America’s College Promise Act of 2015 makes two years of community college free and provides an affordable pathway for low-income students to a four-year college degree. The legislation would give students the opportunity to access quality and affordable higher education that gives them the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century economy.
 
“Our greatest national asset is the genius of our young people. But with the skyrocketing cost of tuition, more and more families across America feel priced out of a postsecondary degree. This is a disservice to our students and our nation in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy,” said Senator Booker. “America’s College Promise Act answers President Obama’s call to Congress to invest in our future workforce by saving students thousands of dollars on the path to a college degree. Our bill provides the kind of support many young people need to reach their potential by creating strategic partnerships between the federal and state government so that all students have a fair shot at achieving the American Dream.”
 
“Higher education should be a path to shared prosperity, not a path into suffocating debt. But unfortunately, college costs and student loan debt are holding back an entire generation and creating a drag on economic growth for our country. America needs out-educate the rest of the world in order to better compete in a 21st century, skills based economy,” said Senator Baldwin. “The America’s College Promise Act is an investment in workforce readiness and our economy. I’m proud to introduce this legislation with the help of my friend Congressman Scott, and with the full support of the Administration, in order to give all students the opportunity to gain the skills they need to compete, succeed, and prosper.”
 
“Students and families are faced with the overwhelming burden of figuring out how to pay for college,” said Congressman Scott. “America’s College Promise is a step in the right direction to help families gain access to quality, affordable higher education opportunities. For low-income students, this bill creates a pathway to a four-year degree at qualifying Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving institutions (AANAPISIs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). At a time when families feel like they’re increasingly having to adapt to a changing economy and technology, America’s College Promise creates a way for them to gain the skills they need to compete in a 21st century economy.”
 
“America’s College Promise is the President’s bold vision, announced earlier this year, to make two years of college as universal as high school was a century ago, helping students earn the first half of a bachelor’s degree and earn skills needed in the workforce at no cost,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. “Community colleges are not just a uniquely American institution, but as the largest most affordable segment of America’s higher education system, they are critical to reaching the President’s goal to have the highest share of college graduates in the world and to ensuring America’s economic prosperity in the future.”
 
During a stop last week in La Crosse, Wisconsin, President Obama highlighted this proposal saying, "Now, in an economy that's constantly changing, we've also got to give every American the chance to earn the skills they need to stay competitive. That’s why we've got to be investing in job training and apprenticeships that help folks earn the skills for that new job or better-paying job. That's why we should make community college free for responsible students -- like Tammy Baldwin is introducing in the United States Senate. No middle-class family should be priced out of the education that they need."
 
Under the America’s College Promise Act, a full-time community college student could save an average of $3,800 in tuition per year. If all states participated under this program, an estimated 9 million students could benefit. This legislation:
•         Creates a new partnership between the federal government and states and Indian tribes to help them waive resident tuition in two years of community and technical college programs for eligible students, while promoting key reforms to accelerate student success;
•         Provides a federal match of $3 for every $1 invested by the state to waive community college tuition and fees for eligible students before other financial aid is applied;
•         Ensures that programs offer academic credits which are fully transferable to four-year institutions in their state, or occupational training that leads to credentials in an in-demand industry;  
•         Maintains and encourages state funding for higher education; and
•         Establishes a new grant program to provide pathways to success at minority serving institutions by helping them cover a significant portion of tuition and fees for the first two years of attendance for low-income students.    
 
The America’s College Promise Act is cosponsored by over 60 members of the House of Representatives and the following members of the United States Senate: Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Ed Markey (D-MA), Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).

Workshops in essential MS Office applications (MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint and MS Windows) can now be brought onsite free of charge to companies and non-profit organizations in Union County. This is possible through a grant from the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development to the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. Programs are delivered by the Industry-Business Institute at Union County College.

“We offer a schedule of these programs on our campuses in Cranford and Elizabeth,” says Dr. Lisa Hiscano, Director of Continuing and Professional Education at Union County College. “But, what makes this offering even more valuable is our ability to bring it to groups of employees at their workplace.”

These 8-hour workshops are taught by highly qualified instructors, include the use of our mobile computer lab and can be scheduled to meet workplace requirements. “Each student also receives a workbook to keep on their shelves for future reference,” says Hiscano. “Minimum class size for onsite classes is ten.”

Classes in Customer Service Skills, Verbal Communications, Business Writing, English as a Second Language and Basic Math and Measurement are also portable and free of charge through the same grant.

Registration is easy for both the open enrollment and the onsite classes. “We have created a system of online registration for both our open enrollment classes AND our client specific onsite classes. This streamlines the process for submitting the information required for the program,” says Hiscano. “Onsite class schedules should be booked two to three weeks in advance.”

Union County College Professor Heidary Received Excellence Award


Union County College’s Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Sherry Heidary, was a recipient of the annual 2015 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Awards. Prof. Heidary received her award during NISOD’s annual International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, which was held in Austin, Texas from May 23 to 26. The awards were given out during the Excellence Awards Dinner and Celebration that was held in conjunction with NISOD’s annual conference. Each award recipient received a specially cast, pewter medallion hung on a burnt orange ribbon. The names, titles, and colleges of all Excellence Award recipients are included in a special booklet that features congratulatory ads from many of the recipients’ colleges.

NISOD’s Excellence Awards recognize men and women each year who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution to their students and colleagues. In 1989, in connection with a University of Texas at Austin national study of teaching excellence, NISOD hosted its first ceremony honoring NISOD Excellence Award recipients. The response to that ceremony was so positive that NISOD began what has become the largest and most inspiring gathering that recognizes the contributions and achievements of community and technical college faculty, administrators, and staff.

“Recognizing those individuals who have contributed to student success and their colleges’ mission is something we look forward to doing each year,” said Dr. Edward J. Leach, NISOD’s Executive Director. “The extraordinary work of these men and women includes not only what they do for their students and colleagues, but what they do for the communities in which they live and work. We’re honored to be able to play a part in celebrating their achievements.”

A Newly Minted Dean and Three Assistant Deans


During the June 23 Board of Trustees meeting, the College officially appointed Dena Leiter to the position of Dean of Learning Resources and approved the hiring of three new assistant deans.

Three current employees competed for the recently created assistant dean positions and all three earned promotions. Sara Lacagnino is the College’s new assistant dean of Humanities and will support Dean Elise Donovan. Nicole Cippoletti has become the assistant dean of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) under Dean Liesl Jones. And Dr. Carlos Barrezueta is our assistant dean of Social Sciences/Businesses, which has Dr. Lester Sandres Rapalo as the new dean.

As Dean of Learning Resources, Ms. Leiter will be responsible for the Libraries, the Academic Learning Centers, the Media Center, and Distance Education. She directs services at three campus-based libraries and the Academic Learning Centers, managing faculty librarians, library staff, and ALC staff. She manages a $2.3 million budget. Before becoming a director in 2012, she served in an interim role and as an assistant librarian and an adjunct librarian. In these roles, she instructed students in research methods using the library Web site, which included use of the online catalog, electronic databases, and bibliographic-management tools. She also managed library acquisitions. Her educational credentials includes a master’s degree in Library and Information Studies from Rutgers University.

Ms. Lacagnino has worked for Union since 2009, as a coordinator and then a project director for the College’s Title V-funded programs for Hispanic students. The initial program was the Center for Student Success. Then in 2012, the College introduced a new Title V program called LEAP (Learning Enhanced through Accelerated Paths). Ms. Lacagnino’s prior experience included positions in Financial Aid offices at Seton Hall University and Wagner College. She has a master’s degree in Human Resources Training and Development from Seton Hall.

Ms. Cippoletti joined Union in 2012, and served as an academic affairs administrator for Cranford Campus Associate Vice President Negar Farakish. Her prior experience at Union included work as a program assistant for the Title V STEM program and as a youth-programs instructor for Continuing Education. Her prior work experience includes full-time teaching positions at Hackettstown High School, Weehawken High School, and McNair Academic High School, and as a Director of the Harlem Educational Activities Fund in NYC. She has a master’s degree in Education from St. Peter’s University of Jersey City.

Dr. Barrezueta has served as the College’s ombudsman and affirmative-action officer since 2013. His prior experience includes work at Miami Dade College as the executive director for the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Initiatives. He earned his juris doctorate degree from Yale Law School, where he also served as a post-doctoral fellow. His bachelor’s is in Political Science and History from Columbia University.

Ms. Leiter’s promotion and the appointment of the three new assistant deans become official on July 1.

Union County College’s King has a Record Golf Season

CRANFORD – Did you know that Union County College has an Intercollegiate Golf Team? Kevin King, of Union County College, was the first player from the College in more than 30 years to win the National Junior College Athletic Association Garden State Athletic Conference Tournament. During the 2015 tournament, both King and Nicholas Pulice qualified to advance and play in the NJCAA Region XIX Tournament, which was held at Crystal Spring’s Black Bear Golf Course on May 11-12, 2015.

During the Region XIX Tournament, King shot rounds of 79 and 82, landing 8th place out of a field of 43. Pulice shots rounds of 98 and 99. King advanced to represent both Union County College and Region XIX in the NJCAA Division III Golf Tournament that was held at Lake Chautauqua, New York from June 2-6, 2015. King landed 31st place out of 93 and finished the tournament with the 5th highest number of birdies for the entire field.

The College’s 2015 Intercollegiate Golf Team finished its regular season with a score of 7 wins and 12 losses. The achievements of both King and Pulice contributed to the overall success of the season.

CRANFORD – On Thursday, June 18, 2015, representatives from ConnectOne Bank visited with Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin at the College’s Cranford campus. Patrick J. Scanlon, Vice President, Commercial Banking Officer and Director of Government Relations; France Delle Donne, Sr. Vice President, Marketing and Public Relations; and Mark Cardone, First Sr. Vice President, Business Development of ConnectOne Bank presented a $5,000 “Big Check” to the Union County College Foundation. Each year two students will benefit from the scholarship with a $2500 award each. The bank has pledged a five year commitment. Mr. Scanlon was recently appointed to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

College Receives a $500,000 Scholarship Gift


Betty and Fred Kopf of Westfield sent their son Alexander to Union back in the early 1980s. They thought that someday they’d like to find a way to thank the College for the education their son received.  As Betty said, “Union County College helped my son and continues to help thousands of County residents each year. Setting up a scholarship fund will ensure that future generations of County residents benefit from the service that the College provides.”


The Kopfs made good on their pledge. The Kopfs’ $500,000 gift is a monumental amount for any community college to receive, and one of the largest gifts in Union’s 82-year history.

As an endowed scholarship, the Betty and Fred Kopf Family Fund will generate a guaranteed return of 5 percent—which is $25,000 annually, forever.


The College collected the donation on June 10 after receiving initial notification on May 22. Fred admitted, “I frankly didn’t expect anyone at the College to be in the office at 4:45 on a Friday afternoon to answer the phone, so I thought that I would just be leaving a message on an answering machine.”


It goes without saying that Union County College President Margaret McMenamin and her staff were elated to be in the office to take the call in person. She says, “The Kopfs’ donation will be transformational for County residents. The scholarship will support students who have the intelligence and the desire, but unfortunately lack adequate financial support, to pursue their dream of a college education. Every year, a new group of amazing, appreciative students will be able to thank the Kopfs for this wonderful gift.”


Union County College Foundation Executive Director Doug Rouse is ironing out the details of the endowed scholarship with the Kopfs. He says, “The Kopfs’ Scholarship will support nine students every year. Because the scholarship is endowed—which means it is above $25,000—the Kopfs’ donation will be a permanent legacy in the Kopf Family name.”


The current plan is for the scholarship to provide annual funding as follows: Two students who have already attended the College (having earned at least 30 credits) will receive full scholarships which—including books—is valued at $5,000 apiece. As President McMenamin says, “The value of this is that it will provide an incentive for these students to get to the finish line, to graduation.”


Two other students who may be first-time students will also receive full scholarships, including books, at $5,000 apiece.


The remaining $5,000 will be split among five students.


The one constant for the scholarships, and in keeping with the Kopfs’ intention to “give to their local community college,” is in ensuring that every scholarship recipient is a Union County resident.graduation.
 

Construction Code Courses offered this summer at Union County College


The Office of Continuing Education at Union County College is offering Uniform Construction Code courses this semester for individuals interested in construction and licensure. These programs have been approved by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.

The Building Inspector I.C.S. course is a 75 hour program which provides students with the educational information on building code requirements for medium-sized industrial and commercial structures. The course will cover building construction, foundation, design, wood and steel frame construction, fire resistance rating, requirements for building sub code, testing material and uniform construction code. The course will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from June 15 through September 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The tuition fee is $525.

The Sub code Official course reviews the duties and responsibilities of the Sub Code Official and discusses administration and legal aspects of code enforcement. Students will learn how to review construction documents and building plans for sub code compliance. The course will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from July 30 through September 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The tuition fee is $450, and students must already have a technical license (i.e., R.C.S., I.C.S., or H.H.S.) to enroll.

IBI Offers Free MS Office Training to Area Companies


Elizabeth - Workshops in essential MS Office applications (MS Excel, MS Word, MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint and MS Windows) can now be brought onsite free of charge to companies and non-profit organizations in Union County. This is possible through a grant from the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development provided to the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. Programs are delivered by the Industry-Business Institute at Union County College.

"We offer a schedule of these programs on our campuses in Cranford and Elizabeth," says Dr. Lisa Hiscano, Director of Continuing and Professional Education at Union County College. "But, what makes this offering even more valuable is our ability to bring it to groups of employees at their workplace."

These 8-hour workshops are taught by highly qualified instructors, include the use of our mobile computer lab and can be scheduled to meet workplace requirements. "Each student also receives a workbook to keep on their shelves for future reference," says Hiscano. "Minimum class size for onsite classes is ten."

Classes in Customer Service Skills, Verbal Communications, Business Writing, English as a Second Language and Basic Math and Measurement are also portable and free of charge through this same grant.

Registration is easy for both our open enrollment and our onsite classes. "We have created a system of online registration for both our open enrollment classes AND our client specific onsite classes. This streamlines the process for submitting the information required for the program," says Hiscano. "Onsite class schedules should be booked two to three weeks in advance."

Phi Theta Kappa Hallmark Award for distinguished advisor


Karen Schmidt, Associate Professor of Psychology and advisor to Union County College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, received a Phi Theta Kappa Hallmark Award for distinguished advisor. There are nearly 1200 advisors for Phi Theta Kappa internationally and only 70 were nominated for this award. Prof. Schmidt was one of only 30 awardees chosen to receive the Distinguished Advisor award.  She was a recipient of the award for the Phi Theta Kappa Middle States Region.

Assemblyman Holley Visits Union's ALC


New Jersey Assemblyman Jamel Holley had received a great report about Union County College’s Academic Learning Centers, so he wanted to get a first-hand view.

When he was Roselle’s Mayor and as an adjunct instructor at the College, he had heard high praise about the Academic Learning Center. “Constituents and students have come up to me over the years telling me that they wouldn’t have made it to graduation were it not for the tutoring help they received at the ALC,” he says.

Now as Assemblyman for the 20th District, and recently appointed to the NJ State Assembly’s Higher Education Committee, he decided to make visiting the ALC a priority.

Assemblyman Holley went to the ALC on May 21. Even though the College’s Spring semester had ended a week before, and Commencement held a day before, the ALC was still in business serving students looking to get a jump on summer-term classes.

What gives the ALC its edge are its “peer tutors.” These are the high-achieving Union County College students or recent graduates who earn work-study pay to provide tutoring assistance on all three Union campuses for any student asking for help.

The numbers of students served is staggering. Over the past year, the ALC’s peer tutors provided more than 50,000 instruction sessions across all disciplines, but mostly in Math. In fact, five years ago, when Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin became Union’s president, one of her first priorities was to establish Math Success Centers as part of each campus ALC.

During his tour of the ALC on Union’s Cranford Campus, Assemblyman Holley devoted much of his visit to listening to students individually discuss their own educational and career aspirations. “The stories of these students, their backgrounds and their dreams—they tug at your heartstrings. I felt a great deal of empathy for them.”

Empathy proved to be a two-way street as Assemblyman Holley told his own story, of his being raised in the County by a single mother and having overcome a number of obstacles on his own path to success.

His message to students was welcome: “Keep studying hard and making the most of the opportunity that Union County College is offering. This is a great community college and a Union County treasure.”
 

College for Teens Program at Union County College

CRANFORD – This summer the Office of Continuing Education at Union County College is offering the 2015 College for Teens program sponsored by the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

This free program is offered for two sessions. Each session will be held for two weeks and will meet from Monday through Thursday. During the session students have the chance to explore and research careers in financial markets, criminal justice or healthcare, while experiencing life on a college campus. Students will learn about relevant career opportunities from prominent guest speakers. Some of the learning opportunities will include hands-on projects. The morning session will be held from July 13 to 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The afternoon session will be held from July 20 to 30, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

To apply for the College for Teens program, students must be enrolled in a Union County high school by September 2015 and possess a grade point average of C or better. In addition to the application, students will need to submit a copy of their recent report card along with a recommendation letter from a teacher or guidance counselor. Union County College Hires Three New Deans

CRANFORD – During the Union County College Board of Trustees meeting held on May 19, the College appointed three new deans. Dr. Elise Donovan has accepted the newly created administrative position of Dean of Humanities. Dr. Liesl Jones is the Dean of the newly created STEM Division. Dr. Lester Sandres Rapalo is the new Dean of Social Sciences/Business. This year, the College transferred the management of academic departments from eight faculty department chairs and two directors to four academic deans. The four academic divisions are STEM, Allied Health/Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences/Business.

A senior professor of English at Union County College, Dr. Donovan has served in a number of teaching and administrative roles throughout her 23-year career at the College. Most notable is her experience at Union as department chair of English, as coordinator of developmental English education, and as coordinator of English for Title V grants for student success.
 
Dr. Jones’ administrative experience includes her current role as department chair for the Biological Sciences Department at Lehman College of the City University of New York system. A professor at Lehman since 1998, Dr. Jones’ previous roles include serving as the faculty fellow and chair of the Neuroscience Doctoral Subprogram.

Dr. Lester Sandres Rapalo teaches middle-school and high-school students at the Calhoun School in New York City. Prior to that, he worked for more than five years at Orlando-based Valencia College, where his responsibilities included serving as interim dean of the Humanities and Foreign Language Department and as chair of the Foreign Language Department. He was also Valencia’s program director for Study Abroad and served in a similar capacity at the University of Massachusetts. All three deans will begin on July 1 and report to the College’s Chief Academic Officer Dr. Maris Lown.

Summer Youth Courses offered at Union County College


CRANFORD – This summer the Office of Continuing Education at Union County College is expanding its course offerings for youth ages 11-18. Many classes are taught by NJ-certified teachers and local businesses that specialize in delivering high-quality youth programs.

A sample of educational classes for youth ages 11-13 include Design Your Own Comic Book, Guitar, Better Thinker-Better Writer-Better Grades, Cartooning, Order in the Court, Algebra Review and Graffiti Art/Design Projects. The College also partners with Super Science, Black Rocket and IncrediFlix to offer classes such as Minecraft Modders, LEGO Star Wars and Motorized Machines, Advanced Imagination Flix, and more.
 
New this year is our partnership with FYI Creations. The New Jersey based organization offers creative and innovative summer enrichment workshops with imaginative programming targeted toward girls such as Duct Tape Divas, Girls Rule! and Teaching 101. 

Sample classes for students ages 14+ include SAT Test Prep, Algebra Review, Write for College, Teen Finance Workshops, Cartooning, Servsafe for Teens, The Artist Within, App Attack, Minecraft Designers, Make Your First Video Game and Certified Pharmacy Technician. The cost of the courses vary, and all classes will be held at the College’s Cranford campus, located at 1033 Springfield Avenue.

Memorial Art Show Honors Beloved Professor and Mentor

CRANFORD - To celebrate the memory of Dr. Murray Shereshewsky, an art show will be presented in the Richel Student Commons at Union County College’s Cranford campus on May 31, 2015. The show will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A professor of Psychology and Sociology at Union County College, Dr. Shereshewsky was also a talented professional artist, recognized for the quality and variety of his paintings. His work demonstrates great diversity of themes, drawn with pen and ink, tempera paints and mixed media.

Dr. Shereshewsky’s professional career as a respected teacher, school administrator and professor spanned 40 years. Always a champion of young people in need, donations to the show will benefit those students he most wanted to help – first generation students who just need a little extra assistance to succeed in college.

Dr. Shereshewsky, who earned his PhD from New York University, served as Executive Director of the National Alternative Education Association and published in the fields of History and Education. A longtime resident of Westfield, NJ, Dr. Shereshewsky passed away in April 2014.

Although admission to the show is free, the suggested tax-deductible donation to the Union County College Foundation is from $25-$50.  All donations are to be submitted directly to Union County College Foundation, via the website,

Union County College’s Supply Chain Management (SCM) Training Program Seeks Employers for On-Site Training

 
ELIZABETH - As part of a nationwide consortium of colleges and universities participating in a LINCS grant, Union County College has a new training program to offer in eight different areas of Supply Chain Management (SCM). The program modules are designed to prepare workers for entry level or mid-level jobs at companies involved with the manufacture and/or movement of goods in New Jersey.

Four of the training modules are ready for on-site training at interested companies and Union County College seeks employers for whom training in these areas would benefit their existing employees. “We are seeking companies who will bring us in to train existing staff. This training carries no cost for the participating employers.”

Areas of training are: Supply Chain Management Principles, Warehouse Operations, Customer Service Operations and Transportation Operations. Each module is classroom based, forty (40) hours long and can be scheduled to meet workplace needs.

The program prepares participants to sit for the certification exams endorsed by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). Content was developed with industry input.

Union County College is participating in a federal grant program to develop training in Supply Chain Management (SCM). A LINCS national consortium of twelve (12) colleges and universities have designed this training program to meet current and future SCM employment needs. The LINCS (Leveraging, Integrating, Networking, and Coordinating Supplies) SCM consortium is developing curricula in the following areas in addition to those listed above:  Demand Planning, Manufacturing and Service Operations, Inventory Management, Supply Management and Procurement.
 

Union County College President McMenamin Chosen to Serve as Presidential Representative for NJCAA


Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin was re-elected to serve a second three-year term as a Presidential Representative of the Northeast District for the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association. The election was held during the NJCAA’s Annual Conference, which took place during the week of March 24 in Tucson, Arizona.


President McMenamin had been initially elected in 2012. As a Presidential Representative, she votes on rules and regulations for an organization.
Founded in 1938, the NJCAA has 525 schools in 24 regions throughout the United States.
 
NJCAA headquarters are in Colorado Springs, CO. Union County College is part of Region XIX and has 14 athletic teams.


Union’s Track and Field Team Wins Big at Nationals


It was a stellar weekend for Union County College’s Track and Field team as they earned three gold and a silver medal at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Track and Field National Championships. The competition was held in Utica, New York, from May 7 to 9, 2015.

 
Field Team member, sophomore Samard Walker, of Jersey City, took the gold in the Men’s Discus. He threw 46.89 meters, beating Kyle Dunn-Devine of Thaddeus Stevens. He also earned a silver medal in the Shot Put.
 
Walker was also named the Region XIX Men’s Field Athlete of the Year for the East Region and was a recipient of the USTFCCCA’s National Athlete of the Week. He was the only NJCAA Division III athlete to be invited to compete in the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival. For the Women’s team, Lady Owl Tamoya Brown, of Elizabeth, made Union proud when she won two gold medals. Her first gold medal was in the 100 Hurdle with the time of 15.49 and her second gold medal was earned in the 400 Hurdle with her time of 1:05.51. Brown also took fifth place in the Women’s Long Jump.
 
Brown was also named the Region XIX Women’s Track Athlete of the Year for the East Region in the 100 Hurdle and 400 Meters. She led the squad to a third-place Region XIX finish.
Other members of the team also placed during the weekend’s competition. Lady Owl Gia Shim, of Roselle, took sixth place in the shot put. Savonn Maye, of Springfield, also placed. He took eighth place in the long jump and ninth place in the triple jump.
This is Union’s third season in track and field and the third national championship for the College in its 82-year history. The National Junior College Athletic Association (Division III) includes 98 community colleges across 14 states and 24 regions.
 

Union County College Names Three to the Board of Trustees


Union County College recently welcomed three new community members to serve on the College’s Board of Trustees. At the April 28, 2015, Board Meeting, Union County College Board of Trustee Chair Vic Richel, joined by Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin, presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Cherron Rountree and Marlenes Teixeira. Board of Trustees Chair Richel is pleased with the appointments, believing that…” we have three citizen leaders who will bring fresh perspectives to the Trustees in their service to the College.”

 
Abubakar T. Jalloh, who will be sworn in at the May 19 meeting, currently serves as the Municipal Clerk for the city of Plainfield. He is the third Clerk to serve Plainfield in 33 years. Mr. Jalloh has more than ten year experience serving the public in state and local government positions. He is an active member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and the Municipals Clerks Association of New Jersey. Mr. Jalloh has a Bachelor’s of Science from Syracuse University and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University.
 
Cherron Rountree currently serves as the Business Administrator for the city of Rahway. In this position, she handles the day to day administration of city affairs and coordinate the activities of nine municipal departments. Prior to her current position, Ms. Rountree worked for the County of Union as the Deputy Director of the Department of Parks and Community Renewal. In this position, she managed the daily operations of the department and a $20 million budget. Her many years of experience in working with public government and the public, qualifies her as an asset to the College’s Board because of her knowledge of government. Ms. Rountree has a Bachelor of Arts in political science and psychology from Rutgers University and a Master of Public Administration from Wagner School of Public Service, New York University.
 
Marlenes Teixeria has almost two decades of service in the public education system. She currently serves as the Choral Director for the Terence C. Reilly Gifted and Talented School #7 in Elizabeth. She previously served as Choral Director in Elizabeth’s Dr. Antonia Pantoja School 27. Ms. Teixeria has a Bachelor of Arts in music performance from Kean University and a Master of Arts in music education from Boston University. She also holds supervisory and principal certification.
 
 

Reception on May 8 for Winners of Union County College’s Student Art Competition


CRANFORD – On Friday, May 8, 2015, the public is invited to view the winning works from the “Union County College 2015 Student Art Competition.” At the reception, the student winners will be available to discuss their artwork and how they developed the pieces. The annual Student Art Competition is sponsored by the Union County College Art Society, a Student Government supported extracurricular organization, and the English/Fine Arts/Modern Languages Department. Union County College Senior Professor and Department Coordinator Anthony Nicoli, along with Senior Professors George Hildrew and Robert Yoskowitz, serve as the club’s advisors.

At the end of each academic year, students at the College are invited to submit art works that they created throughout the year to be judged by a trained outside art professional. Subsequent to judge review, prizes for creative excellence are awarded in the following categories: Best Work Submitted and First, Second, Third, Fourth and Honorable Mention in the categories of painting, drawing, illustration/design, and photography.
 This year the art competition was juried by Ms. Dawn Delikat, who is the Associate Director of the Pen and Brush, Inc., an international arts organization located in New York City since 1894. The judging of the event was held on Friday, April 24, 2015. 

An Artists’ Reception for the exhibit will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015, in the lower level of the Richel Student Commons on the College’s Cranford campus. Union County College to Host Information Session on May 12 for New Training in Fabricated Metal/CNC Machinist Skills


CRANFORD - Union County College will begin an Advanced Manufacturing Training program in May. To launch this effort, the College is holding an information session for unemployed workers and for employers in need of trained workers in Fabricated Metal/CNC Machinist skills. The information session will now be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Union County College’s Kellogg Building in Room 427.

This event is open to job seekers looking to acquire skills necessary for employment in advanced manufacturing jobs. Requirements are as follows: must be unemployed or recently exhausted benefits; must have a high school diploma or GED (recommended, not required); must be mechanically inclined; must pass Bennett Mechanic Aptitude Test; have reliable transportation; must be ready to work upon completion of the training; and must pass the Satisfactory background/drug screening.

Union County College is inviting employers to attend this event and do the following while in attendance: hear an overview of the training by the College and the course instructor; meet potential trainees/job seekers and conduct ‘speed’ group interviews with them; provide feedback to Union County College from those interviews to assist in selection of trainees from among the candidates; and employers who meet these candidates will assess their general employability and quality as an addition to their operation. Candidates for training must also pass the Bennett Mechanical Aptitude Test and meet other criteria.

Pre-registration for participation is required. Upon completion of this training, (288 hours of hands on training) the graduates will take the National Institute for Metalworking Skills Machining Level 1 exam. Upon attaining these skills and passing the test, these graduates will be available to the participating employers to fill open positions.

Union County College Student Wins Top National Scholarship

 
For the first time ever, a Union County College student has won a prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. The Scholarship will award the student, Nuno Pereira of Hillside, up to $40,000 per year to complete his bachelor’s degree after he graduates from Union in May.

Mr. Pereira learned of his stunning achievement during the Apr. 28, 2015, Union County College Board of Trustees meeting on the Cranford Campus. He will graduate from Union with an associate degree in Criminal Justice and continue in his major when he transfers in the Fall to John Jay College of the City University of New York.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students in the country. The JKC Foundation is a legacy of the billionaire philanthropist and former owner of the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Lakers.

This year, more than 2,000 students from 540 community colleges applied for the scholarship. Mr. Pereira is one among the 90 who received the award.

A review panel of distinguished university faculty and admissions professionals judged the applicants based on a number of criteria, including academics, financial need, persistence, demonstrated leadership, and the desire to help others. Mr. Pereira serves as president of Student Government at Union and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Walker launched the shot put 15.80m (51-10) at TCNJ, taking second there and establishing himself as the 2015 NJCAA DIII leader in the event. He did so the day after competing as the only JC DIII athlete in the shot put at the Penn Relays. Walker is the defending national champ in the discus and was third in the shot put a year ago. His 15.80m throw would have won 2014 nationals by over a meter.

Union County College’s New Research Director


On April 7, Elizabeth Cooner became Union County College’s new Executive Director of Institutional Research in the Assessment, Planning and Research Department. In this role, she manages a staff of three that supports the College’s strategic planning, institutional development, and assessment.

The APR Department provides data and reports to support decision-making, management, policy formulation, evaluation, and accountability. In addition, APR prepares and submits mandated federal and state reports to external agencies such as New Jersey Higher Education, the New Jersey Council of County Colleges, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and the US Department of Education.

Ms. Cooner brings to Union more than fifteen years of relevant research and planning experience in both higher education and in the corporate research industry. Her prior experience includes more than seven years at Harris Interactive, Inc., a subsidiary of Neilsen, where she served as the Vice President of Social and Public Policy. Ms. Cooner’s experience in higher education includes having served as the Assistant Director of Monmouth University’s Polling Institute and as Monmouth’s Director of Marketing and Institutional Research. She also served in a one-year interim role at Brookdale Community College conducting market and survey research.

Ms. Cooner has a master’s degree in Public Policy Analysis from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University.

Union County College President Margaret McMenamin says Ms. Cooner’s arrival at the College is “welcome and much needed.” She adds, “The APR Department provides data and analysis and forecasts to inform the decisions we make in every aspect of our operations, from budgeting to marketing to academic programming. With our College only two years away from a Middle States visit, Ms. Cooner is coming to us at a critical time. I’m pleased that she understands and appreciates our urgency and that she has the proven track record for being someone capable of hitting the ground running.”

Union County College is undergoing a College-wide Self Study as part of the decennial reaccreditation process, which will culminate with a Middle States visit in 2017.

Trinitas Open House at Union County College on April 21


The Open House will be held on April 21, 2015, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Theater located on the lower level of the Lessner Building at the College’s Elizabeth campus. The Trinitas School of Nursing is located on the third floor of the College’s Kellogg Building. It is a NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education. The Trinitas School of Nursing is a cooperative program with Union County College that awards students a diploma in nursing from the school and an associate in science degree from the College.

 
Representatives will be available to provide information on the enrollment process, including admissions, financial aid, student services, and student activities.

Singh Joins Union County College as New Chief Information Officer

 
CRANFORD - Union County College has a new Chief Information Officer.
 
Inder V. Singh joins the College with more than 25 years’ experience developing information-technology strategies and plans in higher education. For the past 14 years, Singh served as the associate vice president of IT for The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.

Singh’s management experience includes developing IT strategies, budgeting, support services, and project management. In addition, he has designed and built information-technology infrastructures that have enabled multiple campuses to support administrative and academic requirements and to provide centralized emergency notifications.
 
At Union County College, Singh will lead information technology and communication systems over three campuses. He will manage a $15 million technology network and a staff of 28 employees charged with keeping the College’s three- campus computer infrastructure and network functional at all times.

Singh has an MBA in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a certificate in computer programming from Madurai, India. He also holds his Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from Delhi University.
 

Union County College’s Dr. Castaldi Named to NLN Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation Board of Commissioners

 
CRANFORD – Union County College’s Dr. Patricia Castaldi, Director of Practical Nursing and Allied Health, and Interim Dean of the College’s Plainfield campus, has been named to the National League of Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation Board of Commissioners effective March 1, 2015. 

In 2014, Dr. Castaldi was asked to be a member of the CNEA Steering Committee, which is responsible for maintaining the bylaws and policies for the CNEA. As a member of this committee, she was then asked to participate on the Standards Subcommittee for Practical Nursing Education. The Standards Committee participated in the development and revision of the accreditation standards.

The NLN Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation promotes excellence and integrity in nursing education through an accreditation process that respects the diversity of program mission, curricula, students, and faculty. By emphasizing a culture of continuous quality improvement within nursing education globally, the CNEA accreditation process influences the preparation of a caring and skilled nursing workforce.
 
For a program to be considered for accreditation, it must prepare a student to practice the core values of caring, diversity, integrity, and excellence. By focusing on these four areas, students are taught to uphold process and rigor in a caring manner; respecting each program’s diversity of mission, curricula, faculty, and students; to exercise personal, professional and organizational integrity throughout the process; and to promote excellence through clarity of the accreditation process.
 
Dedicated to excellence in nursing education, the National League for Nursing is the preferred membership organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education. NLN members include nurse educators, education agencies, health care agencies, and interested members of the public. The NLN offers faculty development programs, networking opportunities, testing and assessment, nursing research grants, and public policy initiatives to its 33,000 individual and 1,200 institutional members.
 

Union County College’s New Italian Partner


ELIZABETH – On Wed., Mar. 25, Union County College entered into an articulation agreement with John Cabot University, a private, accredited American liberal arts university located in Rome, Italy.

The agreement provides seamless transfer for Union County College associate-degree graduates to the University. John Cabot President Franco Pavoncello visited the Elizabeth Campus to sign the agreement with Union’s Chief Academic Officer Dr. Maris Lown.

Before an audience that included Board of Trustees Chair Vic Richel and Trustees Frank Bolden, George Castro, and Wilson Londono, Dr. Pavoncello chose this occasion to announce the commitment by John Cabot University to fully fund a scholarship for a Union County College graduate every year. Tuition at the University is about $30,000.
 

Lacrosse is ranked 10 in nation


Union County College Lacrosse team has been battling Mother Nature to get out on the field this season, but once they did they earned their way to being ranked 10th in the country throughout NJCAA.

The Owls opened their season hosting Tompkins Cortland Community College from New York.  Union defeated Cortland 6-2 and started the season on a strong note. This past Sunday Union hosted Cecil College who travel from Maryland to play Union again. The Owls worked well together and started to build momentum throughout this game and beat Cecil 17-2.

With the lack of outdoor field practice time the team has been overly excited to get out onto the open field to play. With this said, Union County College Men's Lacrosse is currently ranked 10th in the Nation for NJCAA.

The Owls are scheduled to travel to the 3rd nationally ranked college throughout NJCAA, CCBC Essex in Maryland this Wednesday at 7pm. 
 

The Women's Basketball team is advancing to the District Championship.


The Women's Basketball team beat Dean College on Saturday and is advancing to the District Championship. The score was 62-57.

Teams advancing to the Championship will compete in the NJCAA DivII National Tournament in Overland Park Kansas on March 17-21.
 

Dr. Negar Farakish of Union County College to Receive Exemplary Leadership Award


CRANFORD – Dr. Negar Farakish serves as Associate Vice President and Dean of American Honors at Union County College. She has been employed at the College for almost four years and in that time, she has markedly contributed to the advancement of student success. To honor her success, she has been chosen as a recipient of The Chair Academy’s 2015 International Exemplary Leadership Award. This award recognizes the ability of an individual to advance post-secondary academic and administrative leadership.
 
The Chair Academy, a department of Mesa Community College, and the Maricopa County Community College District, is dedicated to delivering exemplary leadership development. The Academy has offered world-class, competency-based, leadership development programs for college and university leaders since 1992. Leadership programs are offered at organizational, state, regional, national, and international level. The Annual International Leadership Conference attracts leaders from around the world to experience distinguished keynote speakers and presentations. The Academy’s refereed journal is respected as a source of inspiration and best practices in leadership.
 
Dr. Farakish will receive her Idahlynn Karre International Exemplary Leadership award at the Chair Academy’s 24th Annual International Conference. The conference is entitled, “Leadership in the High- Definition Age,” and will be held at the Sheraton in downtown Seattle, Washington from April 7-10. Dr. Farakish was nominated by her colleague, Dr. Barbara Gaba, who serves as Provost of the College’s Elizabeth campus and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Union County School Counselors Association to Host College Fair at Union County College


CRANFORD – On Monday, March 16, 2015, the Union County School Counselors Association will be hosting a College Fair at Union County College’s Cranford campus. More than 90 colleges and universities from throughout the tri-state area will be in attendance. All members of the community, particularly high school students and their parents, are encouraged to attend. 

The College Fair will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the gymnasium, cafeteria, and the Richel Student Commons. This is an opportunity to speak with representatives from the varied colleges and universities and to learn about the differences and similarities amongst the many institutions of higher education. Representatives from the Armed Services, State Police, and Vocational-Technical Schools will also be in attendance. A financial aid information session will also be held.

There is no cost for the College Fair or for parking for the event. Union County College’s Cranford campus is located at 1033 Springfield Avenue.
 

Union County College's Women Basketball Team Win Region XIX Championship!


Union County College's Women basketball won the region XIX Div.II Championship beating Lackawanna Communitity college 69-46. Coach Cheryl Bell was named the Donna Herran, Div.II Coach of the year and Zhane Robinson was the MVP of the tournament.


Union County College will host the next round of the NJCAA Women's Division II District playoffs at the County College of Morris on Saturday March 7 and Sunday March 8. Game times TBD.
 

Union County College's Men and Women Basketball Team's in Region XIX Tournament


Women: Overall record of 23-4, Tied for first place in the region with Lackawanna. The women’s basketball team beat 3rd seed team Harcum 57- 56 today at County College of Morris.57-56. Advancing Union into the region xix championship game to be held on Saturday at County College of Morris.  Game time 11:00AM


Men Finished fourth in the Region.  Beat Brookdale in the quarter-final round on Tuesday evening, 90-67 advancing them to the semi-final round.  The men will play top seed, County College of Philadelphia tonight at 7:30 at Brookdale Community College.  Region Championship game on saturday 3:00 PM.
 

Dr. Barbara Gaba of Union County College to Receive Educational Excellence Award from National Council of Negro Women

 
Dr. Barbara Gaba serves as the Provost of Union County College’s Elizabeth campus and is an Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for the College. She is an active member of the greater Elizabeth community as well. Dr. Gaba has been chosen by the National Council of Negro Women, Inc., Greater Elizabeth Area Section, to be a recipient of the Prestige Recognition Award, “NCNW Educational Excellence Award.”

Dr. Gaba will receive this award at the 10th Annual Harambee Breakfast and Awards Ceremony being held on March 14 at the Renaissance Airport Hotel in Elizabeth. Dr. Gaba is one of five individuals who will be awarded for their outstanding commitment to community service. 
 
The keynote speaker at the ceremony will be the Honorable Alexis Herman, the first African American United States Secretary of Labor. As well, the National Council of Negro Women will be celebrating 80 years of enriching and fulfilling the lives of African American women and their families. The organization was established in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, distinguished educator and life rights leader. 
 
The mission of the NCNW is to lead, develop and advocate for women of African descent as they support their families and communities. The organization fulfills its mission through research, advocacy and national and community- based health, education, and economic empowerment services and programs in the United States and Africa.

Showing of the film “I Shall Not Be Silent” at Union County College in Celebration of Black History Month 

Union County College continues its monthly celebration of African American heritage with the keynote event for the month which will take place on in the Richel Commons. The College will host a screening of I Shall Not Be Silent, a film featuring the life of Rabbi Joachim Prinz, an advisor and supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Following the film will be a panel discussion, Nancy Giles, a writer and contributor to CBS News Sunday Morning, will serve as the panel moderator.  Panelists include; State Senator Ray Lesniak; Union County Freeholder Chairman Mohamed Jalloh; Newark Mayor Raz Baraka; Rabbi Prinz’s daughter, Deborah Prinz; Rabbi Clifford Kulwin Rabbi Prinz’s successor and Rabbi of Temple B’nai’ Abraham in Livingston and the two filmmakers, Rachel Fisher and Rachel Pasternak.

As event organizer Shirley Hollie-Davis says, “In light of what is happening in America today--in Ferguson, Missouri, New York City and in Sanford, Florida--an ongoing dialog is necessary to continually engage a public, but specifically, students, who may have limited access to information regarding how the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement were diverse in ethnicity and religion, how dedicated they were to the Movement, and what significant contributions they made in the name of freedom.”

The event will begin at 2 p.m. and will be held in the Roy Smith Theater on the College’s Cranford campus, located at 1033 Springfield Avenue. This event is being dedicated to the memory of Dr. Clement Price, the distinguished Rutgers professor and historian who passed away on Nov. 5, 2014.
 
 

Union County Freeholder Board supports opening of Union County College's new facility in Rahway


Union County Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh and Union County College President Dr. Margaret McMenamin cut the ribbon officially opening the new Union County College facility in Rahway. They were joined by Freeholder Sergio Granados, Rahway Mayor Samson Steinman, Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC) Board President Dr. Sondra Fishinger and Executive Director Dr. Lawrence McCullough, members of the College's Board of Trustees and Board of Governor and faculty, staff, and students.

By opening this facility in Rahway, Union expands its ability to bring class offerings closer to home for individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations in the Rahway area.

"We are bringing the arts to the County of Union on a higher level than it's ever been done before. We have the facilities, we have the resources, and now we have the education right here in Union County for our students to stay here, to learn here, to live here and to do arts here," said Freeholder Chairman Jalloh.

Presented as part of the Freeholder Chairman's 2015 "Build a Community of The Arts" initiatives - a set of initiatives that seek to build a county-wide arts ecosystem that will grow and stimulate our economy - the opening of this facility is the result of a partnership between the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Union County College, the City of Rahway, and the Union County Performing Arts Center.

Among the planned programs at the new Rahway location are credit and non-credit classes in acting, dance, public speaking, and more. In these classes, students will have an opportunity to volunteer with several of the acting companies that stage productions at the UCPAC. In addition classes will be offered by the Industry-Business Institute for employees of businesses in the area. These are free classes funded by a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. Also courses will be available through the college's Senior Scholars Program and Office of Continuing Education. Classes at the new Rahway location, like all others offered through the county college, will be open to all residents.

"I think it's absolutely essential that we provide these opportunities for our students who endeavor upon the arts for their future. I think people who look at the world from that perspective can make a difference in the world. I'm truly excited to have the partnerships that we have established. Today is about making it happen - this was an idea, now it's a reality," said Chairman Jalloh.

Union County College’s Board Member Zimmermann Named to ACCT Governance and Bylaws Committee


Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin is pleased to announce that Mary M. Zimmermann, Chair of the Union County College Foundation, and member of the College’s Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, has been named to represent Union as an Associate Member of the Governance and Bylaws Committee of the Association of Community College Trustees. 

The Governance and Bylaws Committee is responsible to review resolutions related to the governance of the ACCT, amendments to the bylaws, and the board policies. In fulfilling this charge, the committee helps ensure that the Board of Directors of ACCT is fulfilling its role to represent the member boards in determining and demanding appropriate organizational performance through its written policies. Associate members of the committee may serve three consecutive one-year terms and have full voting rights.

Mrs. Zimmermann, a resident of Summit, NJ, describes herself as a “professional volunteer.” In addition to the time she spends serving and helping to improve Union County College, she also commits her time to other organizations. In July 2010, Mrs. Zimmermann was named Volunteer of the Month by SAGE Eldercare. In her volunteer capacity she delivered meals once or twice a week for the Meals on Wheels program and participated in Summit’s “Loaves and Fishes” food pantry at St. Teresa’s of Avila Church, sorting and bagging grocery staples for families in need. SAGE Eldercare chose to honor Mrs. Zimmermann as a Volunteer of the Month for July 2010 because of her passion and commitment to helping those less fortunate than herself.
 
Mrs. Zimmermann also serves as one of five commissioners on the Summit Housing Authority. The SHA owns and manages 195 low-rent family, elderly, and handicapped housing units. The authority is also the City of Summit’s designated local redevelopment agency and administers the City’s Community Development Block Grants Program. The Authority is responsible for the administrative aspects of the management, development and rehabilitation of affordable lower income housing.

Freeholder Chair Jalloh helps kick off Black History Month celebrations at Union County College


Union County College President Margaret M. McMenamin was joined by Union County Freeholder Chairman Mohamed Jalloh on Feb. 3, at the opening celebration of the college's series of Black History Month events. Freeholder Jalloh addressed the crowd of students, faculty, and staff, speaking about the significant contributions made by members of the black community and the influence of African American culture on today's world.

 In addition to Chairman Jalloh, Union County Freeholder Vice Chairman Bruce Bergen and Freeholder Sergio Granados attended the ceremony. After the welcoming remarks by President McMenamin, the audience was entertained and educated by a group from the Greg Bufford School of Music on elements of dancing, singing, and the history of drumming. Their performance was entitled, "Drums Dance and Music: From Africa to the New World."

 The Greg Bufford School of Music is located in West Orange. The mission of the school is to provide the highest caliber of artistic training for musicians and singers in the community, so that they may achieve their fullest potential as artists, leaders and global citizens. The faculty is comprised of internationally renowned musicians/singers, preeminent jazz, classical, R&B artist, gold/platinum and Grammy award- winning composers and producers. Their skill, talent, dedication and patience is the cornerstone of the learning experience for students of all ages and levels.

The founder, Greg Bufford, studied composition and orchestra percussion at Berklee College of Music. He went on to study jazz drums under with master drummer Philly Joe Jones. He continued his studies in drum and bass with Larry Ridley, Jazz piano with Kenny Barron, Jazz/Motown drums with Freddie Waits, Vibes and Improvisation with Steve Nelson, African percussion with Chief Bey, Brazilian percussion with Dom Um Romao and was mentored by master drummer Papa Jo Jones for three years.
