Union County College Foundation 3rd Annual “Close the Gap” Cocktail Reception is July 11

CRANFORD – The Union County College Foundation is hosting their 3rd Annual “Close the Gap” Cocktail Reception on July 11 in the Victor M. Richel Student Commons on the Cranford campus. This campaign supports the College’s strategic initiative to help shrink the achievement gap that exists for African American students and will also provide financial assistance to help those students complete their degree on time.

This year’s event is being held in memory of Assemblyman Jerry Green. In 2015, when he learned about the low graduation rates among African American male students, Assemblyman Green joined Assemblyman Jamel Holley and a number of Foundation Board members to support the College’s strategic initiative to close the achievement gap. Thanks to his leadership and dedication to Union students, the Foundation has had a dramatic impact on student success.

Since the start of the campaign three years ago, over $100,000 has been invested in scholarships, grant support, and emergency funding for students who are on course to graduate. Thanks to the dedication of the College’s faculty and staff combined with the generosity of our community, the graduation rates for African American male students have more than tripled. With the growth of our campaign support, the Foundation is now proud to also provide financial support to the College’s African American female students.

No other program or campaign in the community college system in New Jersey is having the same impact on student success as we are at Union County College. However, the push forward must continue to meet the ever growing needs of our students.

The opportunity exists for businesses and individuals to participate either as event sponsors or to purchase individual tickets. If you cannot attend, please consider making a donation. For more information about supporting this year’s event, please call (908) 709-7505 or go to https://www.ucc.edu/union-county-college-foundation/ways-to-give/annual-campaigns/.

The late Assemblyman Jerry Green addressed the audience at last year’s Close the Gap Cocktail Reception while Assemblyman Jamel Holley waited to express his support of the campaign.
