Following an open nomination period, honorees were chosen by a panel of independent judges with experience in the financial field. The selections were based on the nominees’ involvement in their industries and communities, along with their achievements, energy, and innovative ideas. Ms. Sousa is one of fourteen in New Jersey that was recognized in the corporate category.

Ms. Sousa joined the College in 2013 as a Senior Accountant. Over the span of her time at the College, she obtained both her CPA and M.B.A. and rose to the position of Assistant Vice President of Finance in 2021.

Ms. Sousa cites strengthening the College’s financial position as one of her greatest contributions. She manages Union’s annual budget and works with each cabinet member individually regarding their budget planning and needs. She is also responsible for the daily financial accounting processes, the College’s annual audit, and the grant submission process.

“We are very fortunate to have Ms. Sousa as a financial leader at Union, and we appreciate that she is being recognized by NJBIZ for her hard work and contributions to the College and our students. Managing a multi-million-dollar budget is not easy and she handles that and more with grace and professionalism. Financial stability and solvency are critical, and we are able to offer our students an affordable and excellent education because of the diligence and financial expertise of Ms. Sousa and her colleagues in our Finance Division,” stated Union’s President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.

Working at Union College fulfills Ms. Sousa both personally and professionally. As an immigrant and first-generation College student, she relates to many of the students. In further support of Union’s students, she is an active contributor to the Union County College Foundation individually and in her role as Assistant VP. She enjoys attending and volunteering at Foundation events since joining the College in 2013.

Ms. Sousa earned her B.S. in Accounting from Rutgers University and M.B.A. from University of South Carolina. In addition to her CPA, she holds a real estate license and her Series 6 securities license. She is fluent in both Portuguese and Spanish.
