English Associate Professor Sophia Mitra has a passion for teaching all levels of English courses from Developmental Reading and Writing to College Composition and Introduction to Literature. Her students praise her for the confidence she engenders in them. She says, “I always assure my students that if I can master a language being a non-native speaker, so can they.” Before joining Union, she taught at Middlesex County College, Raritan Valley Community College and Rutgers University. She has been actively involved in the college life which included chairing the College Novel Committee and serving as an advisor for the Asian Students Association. Currently she serves on the college Curriculum Committee and the Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee. She has a master’s degree in Education from the University of New Haven and a master’s degree in English Literature and Language Studies from the University of Calcutta, India. Currently, she is working on her doctorate in Educational Leadership from Rowan University. Her research interests include use of Canvas assessments to inform faculty practice.
