Meet Matt Alexander, ‘19:
Computer Techie Adds Media Guru to His List of Talents…
Major: Computer Information System Technology
The reasons I chose to attend Union are very straightforward: I knew I’d receive a quality education at an affordable cost and it was close to home. I also wanted to be able to continue my service as an EMT for the Millburn Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad and as a mentor with a leadership program at Union High School, my alma mater. I wanted to stay local to be able to continue with my volunteer work because it is a large part of who I am.
The summer before I started at Union, I applied for a student worker position and was offered a job in the Media Services Department. I love film so I felt this opportunity would be a great way to learn more about video equipment and to do more audio/sound work, something I had also done at Union High.
My supervisor, Director of Media Services Patrick Gallagher, quickly became my mentor. He taught me how to use video editing software, video equipment, and how to choose the proper camera angles when filming. He eventually let me videotape events for the College. Beyond the technical skills I’ve gained from working in Media Services. I am so thankful for the friendship I’ve gained and guidance I’ve received from Patrick.
I was really surprised, when after only a few weeks at Union, Patrick offered me the opportunity to serve as the radio station manager. He taught me how to schedule the shows and the student staff. I learned leadership skills and how to handle all aspects of running the station. I absolutely loved the job! Patrick is one of a kind. He gives all of himself in everything he does. Thanks to him, I’ve had many valuable experiences in my two years at Union.
Although I enjoy everything I’ve learned from Patrick about media services and audio production, I decided to major in computer information system technology because of my intrigue with solving the problems of computer systems. When something isn’t working right, either software, hardware, or both, I enjoy the challenge of finding a resolution. I currently serve as Head IT Administrator for the First Aid Squad and I would love to find a similar position for my full-time job after I graduate. My goal is to work for a company where I am making a difference, such as in healthcare, education, or a non-profit organization. Thanks to the opportunities provided to me at Union, I have become the person I am today, which includes being a proud alumnus as of the January 2019 Commencement ceremony.
Patrick Gallagher is known at Union as, “the voice of the College” because of his fabulous radio voice. He has always had a love for audio production; he’ll tell you it’s in his blood. He can’t remember a time when he wasn’t working on a recording project or helping someone with a video shoot or film. Twenty-three years ago, Patrick began working at Union as a Coordinator in Media Services. He is now its Director. His vast knowledge of audio production and his ability to learn new techniques, equipment, and software have carried him far. Even when he’s not at Union, he’s working as an engineer and sound designer for theater or as a recording engineer for radio. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from William Paterson University.
