Join Us on Wednesday, July 11th

for the 3rd Annual Close the Gap Cocktail Reception

“By awarding me the Close the Gap Scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community.  I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.”  Harlens Exume – Class of 2017

For the past three years, the Close the Gap campaign has worked hand in hand with the College’s strategic initiative to increase the graduation rates among our African American male students.  Since 2015, over $100,000 has been invested in scholarships, grant support and emergency funding to students who are on course to graduate.  Thanks to the dedication of the college staff and the generosity of our community, the graduation rates for African American male students have more than tripled.  With the growth of our campaign support, the Foundation is now proud to provide financial support to our African American women as well.

No other program or campaign in the community college system in New Jersey is having the same impact on student success as we are at Union County College.  However, we must continue to push forward to meet the ever growing needs of our students.

Union County College has had no better friend than the lion of the New Jersey Assembly, Assemblyman Jerry Green.  Dedicated to the idea that education can transform a community, Assemblyman Green was a tireless advocate for community college education in New Jersey and helped ensure that Union County College was always able to provide everyone from the community the opportunity to receive an affordable, high quality college education.

In 2015, when he heard about the low graduation rates among African American male students, Assemblyman Green joined with Assemblyman Jamel Holley and a number of Foundation Board members to raise funds to support the College’s strategic initiative to close the achievement gap.  Thanks to his leadership and dedication to the students of our community, the Union County College Foundation has had a dramatic impact on student success.

In honor of his commitment to Union County College and our students, the Foundation Board decided to hold this year’s Close the Gap Cocktail Reception in his memory.
