Changing Majors

F-1 students are required to notify International Services and the Department of Homeland Security when there is a substantive change in the information on your Form I-20 academic programs and/or degree levels. Examples of changes that require notification are: a change in major field; a change in degree level; a change in major field and degree level.

Practical Training

Some F-1 students are eligible for practical training, an employment benefit that allows you, as an F-1 student, to gain practical, professional experience in your field of study. There are two types of F-1 practical training: curricular practical training (CPT) and optional practical training (OPT).

CPT is employment used to satisfy the requirements of a required or elective internship,
practicum, or fieldwork course. OPT, unlike CPT, does not require you to register for an internship, practicum, or fieldwork course.

Program Extension

If you are unable to complete your degree requirements by the completion date specified on your I-20 (item # 5), you must apply for a program extension at least 15 days before but no later than the completion date indicated on the I-20.
