UCNJ Student Named 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar

Odudu Ekpenyong from UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ is one of 210 Phi Theta Kappa members named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Ekpenyong, of Springfield, NJ, is a computer science major with a 4.0 grade point average.

The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program helps new Phi Theta Kappa members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Scholars are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating in Society programs and are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. Nearly 1,500 applications were received.

A total of $210,000 will be awarded this year through the Leaders of Promise Scholarship Program. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation provides $200,000 in funding for the scholarships, with $25,000 set aside for members who are veterans or active members of the United States military. The remaining amount is supported by donations to the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation, which provides multiple Global Leaders of Promise Scholarships earmarked for international students.

“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.”

The funds provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation not only aid college completion but also give students the opportunity to engage in Society programs and develop leadership skills to become future leaders in their communities.

“Research shows that Phi Theta Kappa members are four times more likely to complete a college degree than their peers,” said Dr. Monica Marlowe, Executive Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. “The Leaders of Promise Scholarships recognize students for what they have achieved already and assure that financial need isn’t an obstacle to achieving their academic goals.”

“Odudu receiving this prestigious scholarship from PTK is a remarkable achievement and a testament to his dedication and talent. It reflects not only his personal hard work but also the supportive environment we strive to create here. We are proud of his accomplishment and excited to see the positive impact he will continue to make during his academic and professional journey,” stated UCNJ President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.

UCNJ Hosts NASA’s Community College Aerospace Scholars Program Mission III

In early August, UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ hosted a four-day NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program for college students from UCNJ, Essex County College, and Norwalk Community College (in Connecticut). The program focused on three missions that are designed to challenge and build student knowledge and skills by focusing on NASA’s mission goals, collaboration, and career pathways.

Participating scholars had the option to learn either online or in-person. With UCNJ hosting the program in-person, students were also able to take part in a robotics competition. Throughout the course of the program, students were asked to create an engineering design solution to perform a task, review and revise their resumes based on feedback from STEM professionals, summarize job shadowing experiences, learn how to apply STEM concepts to future engineering design challenges, and more. The Aerospace Scholars advanced their capabilities in STEM, which will help prepare them for better representation and service in STEM fields.

“UCNJ has been a NASA partner for a decade. We are honored to work with them to inspire the next generation of engineers. This program and the connections these scholars are making will change their lives and open doors for them after they graduate from UCNJ. Our goal is to provide these scholars with a first-class education with experiential learning opportunities. Moreover, we want to help them to graduate on-time and support them through their bachelor’s degree attainment to better position them for a related career with family-sustainable wage jobs,” stated UCNJ’s President Dr. Margaret McMenamin.

This is not the first time that UCNJ has participated in a NASA program. In 2020, the College was selected as one of only two community colleges that were chosen to participate in NASA’s Micro-G Next Challenge Artemis Program. The Aspen Institute Names UCNJ as a Semifinalist for Prestigious 2025 Aspen Prize

UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ is one of 20 Community Colleges Being Considered for $1 Million National Prize that Recognizes Excellence in Student Outcomes, Both in College and After Graduation

WASHINGTON D.C., May 7, 2024 – Today, the Aspen Institute named UCNJ as a semifinalist for the 2025 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million award is the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among community colleges. The institutions selected for this honor stand out among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high and improving levels of student success, as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds. UCNJ is the only semifinalist institution from New Jersey.

“This prestigious recognition is a testament to the tireless efforts of our incredible faculty and staff. Each and every day, they live our mission of transforming our community, one student at a time. I thank them for their commitment. For our students, I know there’s an outdated perception that attending community college isn’t a first choice. Today in particular, I hope they are proud to be attending one of the top 20 community colleges in the country,” stated UCNJ President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.

Awarded every two years, the Aspen Prize honors colleges with outstanding performance in six critical areas: teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer and bachelor’s attainment, workforce success, broad access to the college and its offerings, and equitable outcomes for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. The winner will be announced in the spring of 2025.

Joshua Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, congratulated the semifinalists. “Each of these colleges has demonstrated a sustained commitment to moving beyond enrollment and retention as the markers of student success to defining their success by whether the education they provide changes lives,” Wyner said. “These colleges understand that enrollment and graduation matter most when tied tightly to post-graduation success in transferring for a bachelor’s degree and in securing fulfilling, good-paying jobs and careers.”

The semifinalists are:

  • Broward College
  • Georgia Highlands College
  • Kingsborough Community College
  • MiraCosta College
  • Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
  • Moorpark College
  • North Iowa Area Community College
  • Northeast Wisconsin Technical College
  • Northwest Iowa Community College
  • Northwest Vista College
  • San Jacinto College

  • State Technical College of Missouri
  • Trinidad State College
  • UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ
  • Wallace State Community College-Hanceville
  • Western Technical College
  • William Rainey Harper College

The Aspen Prize selection process began in October 2023, when Aspen invited 150 community colleges to apply, based on data showing strong, improving, and equitable student outcomes in key areas such as retention, completion, and transfer. One hundred and eighteen colleges applied, and their applications went to a diverse selection committee of 18 higher education experts who assessed each application based on extensive data and narrative answers to questions. Following interviews with leadership teams from applicants receiving top scores, 20 semifinalists were selected. In the coming weeks, the committee will continue its review and narrow the field to 10 finalists, which will be announced in June.

After the 10 finalists are announced, next steps in the process include:

  • Fall 2024: Multi-day in-person site visits to each of the 10 finalists, during which the Aspen Institute and partners will collect additional information and data, including extensive employment and earnings data on graduates from the finalist colleges.
  • Winter 2025: A distinguished, independent Aspen Prize jury will review data and qualitative summaries that synthesize each part of the 14-month analyses, then meet for a full day to select the winner and others for additional recognition.
  • Spring 2025: Announcement of the Aspen Prize winner and celebration of the 10 finalists in Washington DC.
