The Aspen Institute Names UCNJ as a Finalist for
$1 Million 2025 Aspen Prize

Signature Recognition Celebrates 10 High-Achieving Community Colleges From Across the Country

WASHINGTON D.C., June 11, 2024 – Today, the Aspen Institute named UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ as a finalist for the 2025 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million award is the nation’s signature recognition of strong performance among community colleges. The institutions selected for this honor stand out among more than 1,000 community colleges nationwide as having high and improving levels of student success, as well as equitable outcomes for Black and Hispanic students and those from lower-income backgrounds.

“The UCNJ community is ecstatic and humbled by this prestigious recognition by the Aspen Institute. This acknowledgment reflects the dedication and hard work of our entire community — students, staff, and faculty alike. This accolade highlights the leadership and support from our Board of Trustees, Board of Governors, and Foundation Board. It speaks volumes about the transformative impact our institution is making in the lives of those we serve. Being named a 2025 Aspen Prize Finalist is an honor, but it also serves as a reminder of our ongoing commitment to excellence, equity, and innovation in education. We will continue to live our mission of transforming our community, one student at a time. And we are thrilled to be doing so at one of the top ten community colleges in the nation,” stated UCNJ President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.

Awarded every two years, the Aspen Prize honors colleges with outstanding performance in six critical areas: teaching and learning, certificate and degree completion, transfer and bachelor’s attainment, workforce success, broad access to the college and its offerings, and equitable outcomes for students of color and students from low-income backgrounds. The winner will be announced in the spring of 2025.

Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, noted the Aspen Prize finalists not only deserve national recognition, but they also need to be studied and their successes replicated.

“Working-class Americans are experiencing an economy that seems to be stacked against them, while employers are struggling to find well-prepared workers in fields such as teaching, nursing, software development, welding, and advanced manufacturing,” Wyner said. “The 10 Aspen Prize finalists demonstrate how community colleges serving urban and rural communities throughout the country can prepare many more graduates for fulfilling lives and careers in their communities. They show that excellence can be reached in any and every context.”

The finalists are:

  • Georgia Highlands College, GA
  • Moorpark College, CA
  • Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, WI
  • Northwest Vista College, TX
  • San Jacinto College, TX
  • Seminole State College of Florida
  • South Puget Sound Community College, WA
  • Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, WI
  • UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ
  • Wallace State Community College-Hanceville, AL

The Aspen Prize selection process began in the summer of 2023 when Aspen analyzed data on 1,000 community colleges in key areas such as retention, completion, and transfer. In October, Aspen invited 150 community colleges to apply based on data showing high, improving, and equitable levels of student success. The 118 submitted applications went to a selection committee of 18 higher education experts who assessed each application based on extensive data and narrative answers to questions. Following interviews with leadership teams from applicants receiving top scores, 20 semifinalists were selected and announced in May. The committee continued its review and narrowed the field to the 10 finalists.

Next steps in the process include:

  • Fall 2024: Multi-day in-person site visits to each of the 10 finalists, during which Aspen and partners will collect additional information, and additional data collection, including extensive employment and earnings data on graduates from the finalist colleges
  • Winter 2025: A distinguished, independent Prize jury will review data and qualitative summaries that synthesize each part of the 14-month analyses, then meet for a full day to select the winner and others for additional recognition
  • April 17, 2025: Announcement of the Aspen Prize winner and celebration of the 10 finalists in Washington, DC

Dr. Bernard Polnariev of UCNJ Selected for the Aspen Institute’s Rising Fellowship

With Wave of Experienced Community College Presidents Retiring, New Aspen Fellow Commits to Learning the Practices of Transformational Leaders

Cranford, NJ – The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program (Aspen) announced today that Dr. Bernard Polnariev, Vice President for Administrative Services at UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ, is one of 40 leaders selected for the 2024-25 Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship. Applying lessons from over a dozen years researching exceptional community colleges, the Aspen fellowship aims to select and prepare the next generation of presidents who can lead institutions to higher and more equitable levels of student success.

Many sitting community college presidents plan to retire in the next decade, creating an opportunity for college trustees and system heads to select leaders who have the skills and knowledge to achieve better outcomes for students. Aspen Presidential Fellows represent the next generation of college leadership: this incoming class of Aspen Rising Presidents Fellows is 58 percent women, and 55 percent are people of color. The institutions they represent are also diverse, located in 20 states, from small rural colleges to large urban campuses. The fellows, selected through a competitive process, will work closely with highly accomplished community college presidents and thought leaders over ten months to learn from field-leading research, examine demographic and labor market conditions in their communities, assess student outcomes at their colleges, and advance a clear vision for excellent and equitable outcomes for students while in college and after they graduate.

“With so many community college presidents taking or nearing retirement, Aspen has a heightened sense of urgency to develop new leaders who are committed to systemic change,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the College Excellence Program. “Community colleges have a unique opportunity to advance the talent communities need and enable the economic mobility that draws so many students to higher education. I am confident that these fellows can realize that promise—and in turn advance the entire field—by taking the lessons from the highest performing colleges and preparing to bring those lessons to their first presidencies.”

“On behalf of the UCNJ community, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Polnariev on being selected for this prestigious Aspen fellowship. This is a great honor both for him personally and as he represents UCNJ. This fellowship will open new doors of growth and success,” stated UCNJ President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.

Rising Presidents Fellows aspire to enter a college presidency within five years of completing the fellowship. As fellows, they join a network of over 350 forward-thinking peers—175 of whom are sitting college presidents—who are applying concrete, grounded, and innovative strategies to meet student success challenges in their colleges.

The Aspen Rising Presidents Fellowship is made possible by the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Burton Family Foundation, the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, the College Futures Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, and JPMorgan Chase.

Union County Board of County Commissioners Support UCNJ Student Food Insecurity Programs

Cranford, NJ – UCNJ Union College of Union County, NJ has introduced various initiatives to proactively address a critical student success and equity issue: food insecurity. With the ever-growing cost of food, more students are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal will from come from. Recognizing this challenge, the Union County Board of County Commissioners, under the leadership of Chairwoman Kimberly Palmieri-Mouded, have generously provided $250,000 in support of the College’s food insecurity programs. While the County Commissioners have been incredibly benevolent as it pertains to the annual capital and operating aid that they provide to UCNJ, this specific allocation is indicative of their acknowledgment of the needs of their residents related to food insecurity.

The College has introduced several initiatives to help combat this matter of increasing concern. UCNJ created a food pantry, named Hoot’s Market, which provides bags of non-perishable food and hygiene items to students. Current students can also get a hot meal from the College’s cafeteria while on campus using grub passes. Through the Office of Social Work Services, UCNJ hosts farmers’ markets on the campuses. This gives students the opportunity to obtain fresh fruits and vegetables, which are food items not available through the Hoot’s Market.

“While we pride ourselves on providing an excellent education, we acknowledge the difficulty in learning when students are hungry. No student should have to choose between pursuing their education and having a meal. UCNJ is intensifying efforts to support our students through expanded meal programs with the aid from our key partners, the Union County Board of County Commissioners. Through their generosity and steadfast support, we are continuing to build a community where students can flourish,” stated UCNJ President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin.
